The South Africans knocked up some wonderful things!
Perana Capri in yellow for me please.
Yes indeed they did like the BMW 333i Perana Capri in yellow for me please.
I saw one or two of these on the street racing circuits of Cape Town in late 1991 (N1 City donuts and traffic lights GP ) but thought very cool but certainly didn't realise they were that rare. Seemed very popular with the Ford crowd when facing off against the Nissan crowd - I have to say I don't remember any cool Nissan's there...
I thought the European (LHD) 745i was the turbocharged one and the South African (RHD) one had the M1 / E28 M5 engine? Something to do with the RHD packaging of the steering box?
Also yes I think a previous poster was correct, The Animal was Hepburn's racecar, not all roadgoing XR-8s. Thanks for te correction.
While talking about E30s also worth mentioning that the 325iS there came with a 2.7l engine so it had a bit more punch to go with the bodykit. Still got beaten by the 2.0 (redtop) Kadett GSi on the circuits if I recall though?

I grew up there and remember these being launched, they were considered really special. The local touring car series was huge fun to watch, with this vs the Nissan Skyline vs GTV6 3.0 and all manner of other stuff.
My dad would pick me up from school on Friday afternoon and we'd head down to local kyalami track, free entry for Friday practice. Happy days!
The XR6 engine found itself in all sorts of local cars such as Toyota hi ace, VW minibus and various pickups. VW did a Golf GTI engined mk1 Caddy too..,

Ooh, yeah it is. There's a youtube video with that racing too. I can't youtube from work but a search for Group 1 racing South Africa, or something like that, should bring it up.Alfanatic said:

Nice, i've seen one of these for sale recently , i've known about the XR8 for years, obviously not common Knowledge then, i had an Xr4i and 2 4x4's one of which was a 2 litre Turbo Technics model that was quicker when it was made, than the cosworth sapphire produced at the time , and Turbo Technics only made less than 50 of those converting them straight from the Ford factory iirc, sold it to an idiot who stacked it .

Oh wow that brings back memories! Harris isn't wrong either, even the VR6 didn't match the Superboss's acceleration times, and if I remember correctly even the turbocharged 200tS didn't beat it. I suspect it would have at reef altitude though.anyway here's the racing 745i, lined up behind two XR8s, funnily enough.

They also had an ATB diff so they put the power down well. Plus they were 80% of the weight of a VR6
I think even Mr Harris was quite surprised how it took off through the gears!
I had a UK 16V GTE - the engines are fantastic - mine put out over 160bhp as standard and after 100k miles ( it's still going today )
