For performance you simply will not beat the STi, more so if its mapped (its trivial to get a 2ltr STi to 350bhp). However, at 24 insurance could be painful.

The ST is great car, sounds great, nice place to be inside - IMO probably the best all round hatch. Being turbo charged is also easy to map with good gains.

If it was me I would get an STi, put a decent exhaust on it (ebay) and get it mapped... Actually, I think thats what I did wink ... My car is hilariously quick rofl

Insurance = yep HEADACHE. ST is only 100quid a year dearer than the SAAB

ST best all round hatch, yup. drink fuel though compared to golf.

Hillariously quick - only thing I miss from the 200SX. The whole: throttle... wait wait wait wait wait...woosh...wait..wooosh more... BANG!!!!!!!!!!! HORIZON COME TO ME NOW" style of performence.

The civic = someone said "hard work" - what do you mean?
They're great when you are pushing on but when you are not concentrating/not in the mood or on unfamiliar roads in the wet the lack of feedback and torque IMO compromises the car to a much greater extent than something like the ST and the Golf.

The CTR isn't that cheap to get decent gains unless you bolt a hairdrier to it. Are RB5's within your budget?
Why an RB5?

It's only a T2000 with a couple of ProDrive (JDM spec) bits on depending how it was optioned.

If you want a classic Impreza then a JDM STI is the only one that makes sense, or a Type R/RA if you want a bit more hardcore.

Valid point. I can cope with having to rev the nuts off of a 2k weekend blatter, but dont know if it'd annoy me, AND the OH on motorways when just cruising.

The ST is insurable and torquey.... best hatch. BUT the Golf is a nice place to be and looks a bit less "chav".

Audi A3 3.2 seems a nice compromise ? Failing that the S3 is bags of fun and you can extract a reasonable amount of power from them.

E46 cabrio would probably get my vote though.

Stop sodding about and get the STi wink The 2ltr engines in the new-age are rock solid (i know nothing about classics - before I get flamed)... Buy it and drive immediately to surrey rolling road and have Simon map it...

Reckon if I manage to convince myself to sell a perfectly good 9-3 it'll come down to a choice between:

Golf GTi (really like the interior, and there's a tidy 2005 one not far from me for £6500 - but never driven the GTi variant)

and the

STI impreza (dependant upon insurance - driven a 2004 one I think it was, and loved it)

Becuase it's rare, has decent residuals and the Prodrive options are slightly more resolved than a few 'JDM' bits that the average chav will bolt on. Generally considered to be one of the better Impreza choices.

Did someone say S60R?

Doo eet! 310bhp with a simple remap.

Or instead of the Golf Gti what about a Leon Cupra R?

Could pick an absolute minter up for £7k

From that list, for me: Mk 5 GTI.

It really does a great job of being fun and quick whilst also practical and not too juicy plus holds its value pretty well, and also very tunable if that's your bag.

However, i'd fully understand if you just said fk it - and got the impreza. You only live once.. smile

Sensible shoes = octavia vrs instead of a golf, but at 24 i would suggest you're too young for sensible wink

Im usless on golf mk's as Im no VAG fan (that rules out the skoda)... is mk5 the 2005 one I've seen?

Impreza would depend on insurance entirely.

Sensible = running a remapped 9-3 derv. 200ps near enough, 6speed box. sports suspension and uprated brakes.... dunnoh if I can talk myself into it

The S60R is a nice car but you'd be better off with a T5, remap and suspension mods IMO. The R is not known for being a cheap car to run and there are quite a few issues that you really need to be aware of before you commit to buying one.

Agree - bore liners and angle gear problems are pretty prevalent on the S60R. So unless you're getting a warranty, I wouldnt bother. The later 2.4 T5's are stronger engines and have all the go faster bits from the R so will map the same.

I'm selling one BTW in the classifieds!

I agree with the residual bit. But what did it have that was different better? The 237hp tune was an option and not std and I thought it was just a ProDrive upgrade.

Wasn't there a handling package available too, but the bulk of the SE being colour and minor styling.

Very different cars though. P1 is nice, but hugely over priced. An STI IV, V, VI is much better value.

My dad had a C70, 2litre turbo, lovely car even with 170k on the clock.... Just unsure whether the volvo will be enough of a change from the SAAB

If scoob, as it needs to be OH friendly, it'd be a later model... if possible.

better manners
