They get sold to U-Drive. frown

Some of the tired old things we get are just shocking. One got a prohibition notice on the A303 DoT inspection place for a rusted and broken fuel tank strap.

I remember seeing loads of old UK-spec trucks out in Tanzania when I was there. The usually have the body pointing at a different angle to the wheels and make a shocking noise, yet they carry on regardless hehe

There is a businessman in Nottingham who makes a living out of trading old tractor units, a very good living too - I wish I was a million behind him.

A local pub/nightclub used an old ERF Cab (fibreglass) as a DJ booth - anyone remember it in the Pirate in Falmouth during the early 90s?

I was rather surprised driving into Luanda port one day to find 3 RHD tractor units still with their UK plates on parked at the side of the track.
Still signwritten with a Yorkshire based haulage company name, painted in their original green paint.

They were 1985 C plated trucks and looked as though they'd been in Angola for a long time!

There are LOADS of old school lorries in Kenya. Particularly 60's Mercs. No idea what engines they have but they sound superb.

I used to import them to Cyprus when I lived there - The local cement/concrete works was buying-up hundreds of scania units, extending the chassis and sticking a mixer or concrete pump on the back - They didn't last long as they were very badly driven.

Yup! Round here of you get stuck behind a slow stinking thing it's always a horsebox.

By the way, you may have noticed that "fairground" lorries and other vehicles are often very old. this is because there are exemptions from a lot of the regulations for "Showman's vehicles". This includes road tax, tachograph regulations and all sorts. Brief outline on this link,

Useful link. I had always wondered how they were able to do 'double trailers' (as in a rigid lorry pulling a trailer, pulling a caravan).

+1 - I was rather taken aback to see a lorry in Arusha still wearing the colours of a haulage company from about 20 miles up the road from me...

Well what with the recession and everything, some businesses are having to take on work further afield to make ends meet... wink
