RE: New Stratos Production On Hold...For now
Discussion
It's probably down to the fact, that if the car turns out to be total st, seeing as it's based on a ferrari, some of that bad rep, will come down on them by association
Even worse, this guy could be the motoring equivalent of Bernie Madoff, why risk the reputational damage of allowing some dude, to build 40 cars using your cars as a donars (therefore implying some kind of connection/endorsement)
Sure the above might be unlikely, but look at the damage being done to News Corp now, because the paper division, a very small part of the overall operation, hacked a load of phones for some cheap stories, now theres talk of them loosing there broadcast licence etc, sure that's unlikely but at the very least the takeover of BSSKB is going to be delayed a long time, if it ever happens at all now
Ferrari, quite rightly, thought no thanks, as would any other large company, the risk of getting into bed with the wrong sorts and having your reputation trashed, is simpy far to great, look what happend to the accountants firm that did the accounts for Enron
I cant believe people are actually surprised at this?

Peter450 you're right, nobody should be surprised at this, and I for one am glad this car's not going ahead. The original Stratos was great because of it's rallying success - not because of the way it looks. To continue with this current version would be a sleight on everyone's dignity.
Which is perhaps why the car looks like it's shrugging and apologising for its existence...
Just like every other Lancia made since, maybe the Montecarlo??

I'm being rather sceptical here, but: I wonder if Ferrari really did say no or if this is just an excuse by the people behind the Stratos project to not take it any further due to lack of interest. If they really had the orders, I don't see it being that hard to produce the car with somebody else (Coventry Prototype Panels for example) and I also don't see anything official from Ferrari in this press release at all - it's not like anyone at Ferrari has been quoted. Besides, people rip off Ferrari's all the time with MR2 kit cars so this is not that different to that.
Thanks, Ferrari!
At last somebody says NO to yet another play-it-again-Sam type product lacking any creativity.
The Lancia Stratos is an icon. It's been the right car - back then. Just like the Ford GT40, Fiat 500, those pony cars. The Beetle. They all were right, if not fascinating. Back then. When they were conceived, not copied.
How about some new ideas of your own, Mr. Stroschek?

Ferrari care about $, like 99% of companies of course.
If he offers them x hundred thou per car, they’ll be more than happy.
Totally different note: Ferrari sue those who make replicas of their cars. Yet they are happy for Tom Shaughnessy who located bare Ferrari chassis 0202A which used to be the underpinnings of a 340 America Vignale Spyder to rebuild the car under its original title! All that’s left of it is a rusty old chassis that has been chopped and added to, to form a different car, but hey it has the little plate that states 0202A. But, this is business for Ferrari’s relatively new classic restoration department, good business, they’ll be making a new motor etc, but surely this is no more than a replica.

I thought Ferrari ad a good PR department these days?
Seems not.
Allowing a limted run of say 10 cars or so would have given a defunct chassis a new lease of life on the second hand market, driving up the price of the existing chassis and exiting F430 Scuderia owners happy. And as these luxury car manufacturers always claim, someone who buys a Lancia Stratos will have more than one Ferrari n their garage anyway so its highly unlikely to affect new car sales.
seems a bit odd to me they haven't allowed this, on both a business case and a PR case.

Why would people think Ferrari would want to provide donors for this? Ferrari are about pushing design forwards. These rehashed versions of old cars are not something they want to be associated with.
This. Everybody knows that Ferrari are very keen to protect their brand. The Stratos wouldn't be a new car if it was to go into production, it would be a 430 with a different body.

Alfa 8C - Ferrari based
All new Maseratis - Ferrari based
What is wrong with the Stratos being Ferrari based? The original had the Dino engine. So Fiat please exert some pressure on Ferrari. This Stratos would be a great halo product for the Lancia marque.
Problem with that is that within the FIAT empire Lancia are no longer the sporting brand, Alfa is.All new Maseratis - Ferrari based

To equate roughly to VW's brands:
Alfa is Audi/Porsche
Fiat is VW/skoda
Maserati is Porsche
Lancia is the brand they don't know what to do with. At best its high end VW, but it doesn't sell outside of the continent so there is no real reason to risk your best brand by building a halo for a company that no-one in the US can remember.

The crazy thing is that if Lancia was to have a reborn Stratos as a halo car to help rekindle the brand it would be built and designed by Ferrari anyway. I can't see why they don't do it but as a proper new Lancia rather than a cut and shut, just look how popular that Alfa 8c was.
Would love to see my old Montecarlo reborn. ( In plastic no doubt ) Mid engined, lightweight, turbo? Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
