Does the accident really have that much a bearing? I'm sure the same could be said for the CLK-GTR /LM given it's '99 flip, but it doesn't seem the first thing that springs to mind when people comment on the road car, rather than just how awe-struck they are by the car.
Firstly I'm sure the flip has little or no bearing on value

Secondly the 99 Merc flips (for there was more than one) wasn't a CLK GTR (1997) or a CLK LM (1998) - It was the very different CLR

I remember seeing a yellow one in Cannes in the summer in the late 90's on the 06 Cote D'Azur plates

Wasn't the RUF yellow in the pictures above, but a softer one...

Thanks for clarification. I really wasn't sure and a quick youtube search suggested GTR

until i really read up on that some time ago i wasnt aware either, i do think that the CLR was beautiful car though, such a shame it went the way it did. Poor Mark Webber went over TWICE in it on two seperate days. Would never be allowed to happen now. They were even allowed to start the race!

What is also little-acknowledged is how different the LM and GTR were. That 1997 FIA GT Championship was a cracker though!

I'm afraid I cannot see any merit in any of the late-1990s homologation special GT1 cars as road machines. I'd sooner find a race car with some provenance than one of these which would be utterly hopeless on the road. But maybe that's just me...

I know a little nitpicky, but the 911 GT1 flip was at Road Atlanta, not Road America as the article states.

I hardly see the flip is realy indicative of the cars real performance as it occoured whilst inside the aero bubble of the car in front. On reflection, driving a car that might flip "if you get too close" could be a little "unsettling"!

Allegedly the admirable Mr Webber had a 'spirited discussion' after the second incident with a senior M-B suit (or rather in this instance senior leather jacket!) after being assured that the blowover problem had been sorted.

Road America is in Wisconsin.

Road ATLANTA is where the Petit Le Mans endurance race takes place every year.

I was at Le Mans the year this won and it was my first ever visit. It was an unexpected win, even for Porsche themselves. We hung around after the race waiting for the traffic to die down, when we were asked if we wanted to attend a party by some pretty girls wearing Porsche outfits. Not wishing to be rude we accepted, fast forward and we had the next 3 hours of free booze and a partying with some very chuffed large old German Gents and some friendly young European girls. I have been back to Le Mans every year since that and never been invited to a post-race party again, for which I personally blame the corporates for taking over nowadays, but thats progress I guess. Anyway, brings back happy memories for me, seeing that car, come the Euro win its on the list....

Yeah I saw these too. Apparently the BTR2 Lightweight is one of only 10 produced by RUF. You could have 9 cars like this for the price of the GT1. Oh well - back to reality...
