£600 MGF, fun or folly ?
Discussion
I am no MG or Rover fan boy but I have a bit of experience of them, & for £600 you can't go wrong.
Not especially fast but a good steer, the roof is back in a few seconds & it's not a bad place to be.
If the hydragas droops a bit it is £25 a corner to pump back up. Easy to work on too. I swapped most body panels for a mate who re-shaped his, & the interior, & still got £90 back for the scrapped shell with most of it gone!

can you avoid the HGF with the 1.6? or does it affect that engine aswell?
It can affect all k-series, but HGF usually occurs because of loss of coolant, so if you fit a low coolant alarm you can keep an eye on that, plus many k-series of that vintage will have already suffered HGF and had the new MLS gasket fitted, which cures the problem. A new head gasket on one of these is about £400 from a good mobile mechanic so it's not exactly a huge problem if you plan on keeping the car. So you may as well go for the VVC!i see, i think id probably go for the TF. Ive been toying with the idea of an mx-5 in a year when my leased car goes but i have a soft spot for the MG. Think it looks abit like a mini Jag XK.. So if i bought a TF without the preventing stuff done for HGF, how much should i put aside to get it all done? Sorry for hi-jacking the thread.. just thought id be better off than starting another K-series bashing thread!

Tell ya what, op, if you decide not to, can you pm me the details of the garage?
Will do, have arranged to go and see it tonight as I owe the garage owner a few quid for some wheel bolts, just exchanging emails with the missus, she says "It doesnt feel right", is there any arguing with women, I earn enough at 40 to purchase a six hundred quid car, women are strange creatures.Get it bought! With the top down take the mrs out for a run (or even better let her drive it! )
you'll have a grin bigger than a Cheshire cat if you manange to get some miles in nice weather.
Edit - people just replying folly with nothing else to say really need to drive some £600 cars with ticket! From what the op said this cars deffo worth the gamble.
Tricky question is when do you let go if things start to go wrong! Always my downfall lol.

JAYB - what are you finding its like on fuel? I've kind of contemplated one as a summer commuting shed as it should be a nicer drive and nicer place to be than my 306.
My run is mainly A-roads and I'd say the 45 mpg often quoted is most realistic in those conditions. It sits at under 3K at 70mph in top.elephantstone said:

£400-450 for a new head gasket. But there's no point changing it unless it goes. just check the cooling system for leaks and replace bits when necessary.Justayellowbadge said:

Ok I am not actually six ft seven, about 6 ft 1 but I wouldn't have been comfortable with that view, obviously I could have driven it but I think it would have pissed me right off !
So, its on Ebay but I suspect it will go higher, the chap is called Alan Leach of AJ Leach and Sons Motor engineers of Wilmslow, he is a really nice chap and always has time for a chat and to give some advice, the car isnt bad but certainly not pristine, too many dings but for a bit of top down fun seems fine, started ok, no smoke or noises, would say its worth the six hundred quid he is asking and it may make more on Ebay.
