No surprise that BMW are mulling over a V6, makes a lot sense.
Does it? Why?
Well, a V engine is more compact, that in itself has several advantages.

I'm assuming that it's just going to be the Turbo V8 from the M5 with 2 cylinders lopped off the end off it, exactly like what they did with the current V8 by lopping off 2 cylinders off the V10 from the E60.

BMW toyed with a front wheel drive V6 when the E36 was being developed (according to Car magazine at the time) so this is nothing new in that respect.

Specifically shorter, allowing a longitudinal front engined car to have the major mass of the engine mounted further behind the front axle line, or the car to have a shorter wheelbase, whichever you prefer. Of course the CoG of a V6 engine is presumably lower than that of an I6 too.

It will also fit transverse, as and when BMW decided to go FWD.

yes Given how good NVH isolation is on modern cars, I'm quite surprised BMW have persisted with inline sixes for as long as they have.

I don't think they'll bother with a 6 in the new 1-series (or is it the 2? Whichever one is FWD anyway)

I don't see them bothering with anything bigger than a 2.0T 4 pot.
I'd reckon you right there.

You think that'll happen?

Suppose it might.
I don't know. I certainly hope not but I couldn't really blame them if they did.

I'm surprised too. Especially since Merc after decades dropped the straight six for the 'V'.

Edit: And it was nothing to do with FWD.

Most 3&5 Series owners wouldn't even notice.

Putting F1 tech forward for public viewing. Unlikely. F1 teams are far to paranoid for that.

Paranoid about what? If they get a patent for it, no-one's copying it, so who cares if they know?
Are teams allowed to withhold access to technology via patents in F1? I can't think of any examples of it happening with major new ideas in the past? Surely things like exhaust blown diffusers would have been patented and blocked if it was possible?

I've never seen a diagram make so little sense to me before :S
It's a patent, thats deliberate. Have to be as vague as possible while still including enough detail to patent an idea or technology. If some one then wants to
Try copy or produce something similar and get it out to Market first they have to decipher the patent first.
