reliable and subaru engines are not 2 words that go together

just google subaru and big end failure or head gasket failure.

On the subaru forums, about every 5th post in the tech help sections are about the above, I'm not even exaggerating

A wise man once said to me when I told him I was going to buy an impreza

"I hope you like engine rebuids son"

I really wish I had listened

If an impreza engine goes bang, you are looking at 3K to fix, or 1k in parts and fix it yourself. They are cheap for a reason.

I have been down this road once and never again
That doesn't sound good at all. I've had cars in the past where I've had to get the engine rebuilt and I don't want to go down that route again! My current Alpina is 280bhp and the chances of the engine going pop are very low (in fact I've never heard of this happening at all). Maybe I need to do a bit more research as an Impreza would make a great fun weekend car and good for trackdays too. I don't drive to work so whatever I have is a weekend car. If I bought a PPP I'd keep it standard so hopefully there wouldn't be much chance of engine problems?

I've run three Imprezas, two classics and now a bug-eye WRX PPP, between them I've personally covered about 125k miles without any of the engines going bang (touch wood!). My first classic had over 124k on the clock when it had a car/wall interface and the second had similar when I got run into while stationary. The bug-eye is now on 92k. I can obviously only speak for the 2.0l engine but so far no complaints on that front. Most of the 2.0's I've heard of going pop have been either poorly tuned, poorly maintained or driven like a retard. Sometimes a combination.

Got an 01 WRX PPP Wagon. 87k miles, no problems over last 20k when I've had it. Had an 03 before, also totally trouble free.

IMHO stories about Subaru unreliability are outnumbered considerably by stories about Subaru reliability.

There have been some issues with the newer 2.5ltr engines. They are inherently weaker and some have been pushed to hard. With the hatch there have been some map related issues.

Take internet stories with a pinch of salt. People only ever post the horror stories. Many have been pushed far too hard (especially in the case of the WRX).

Actually yeah, a mates 2.5 STI PPP let go at ten thousand miles, loss of power, puff of smoke, rattle rattle rattle.

Big ends went, big time. He utterly ragged the st out of that car, all the time though. Scary driver.
The 2.0ltr STi lump is bomb proof... A poorly looked after car, is a poorly looked after car, regardless of make... There are tons of old classics and older newage cars out there which have had a hard life... Also, consider the cost, how many things for that money will launch you to 60 in that time wink

My WRX PPP was at 136K miles when I sold it earlier this year having owned it for nearly 8 years. Reliability was excellent apart from a coil pack replaced FoC by the dealer, and a neutral position sensor (common problem).

If they are cared for and serviced regularly they last ages.

I know, i commented on my WRX PPP on Page 1. I'm just agreeing that the 2.5 doesn't seem to be quite as strong an engine. But like i said, that one in particular had a very hard life.
Its a shame, as it makes it a concern to map and mod a 2.5...

Generally, however, they are reliable cars and hardly have an easy life... Look at its another way, if your engine does go bang you have a legitimate excuse to stick new pistons etc in and go for massive power ... rofl

Ours wasn't abused, it was daily driven, serviced properly, no expense spared etc (9 month old car ffs!). Subaru put it down to a manufacturing defect.

Probably get slated but the Bug eye Impreza is actually my favourite one post 2001. My Dad bought a 6 month old Y reg WRX and kept it for 4 years. Really cheap interior but ironically it felt really safe and was a great car

stick to BMW's, I've went back to e30's, much more reliable

My story isn't internet hype, I could post the pics of my ugly rebuild if that helps prove my point?

Boxer engines can struggle with oil lubrication and aluminium blocks don't help either, especially with most of them being an open deck design

This is what the inside of an open deck impreza block looks like

They are very fragile engines

I have had 6 impreza turbos and never once had any engine problems, one had over 150k and was totally reliable, current one is thrashed to an inch of its life on the track on a regular basis and is faultless despite being 18 years old.

Absolute bks - the 2.0s aren't fragile in the slightest.

Just because one engine goes pop, doesn't mean they all do.

I suggest you stop trying to pass off a relatively infrequent failure as a common occurence, as your credibility is rapidly dwindling.

I bought a 2002 wagon with PPP about 18months ago, for a winter/kids' football car. Paid around £4.5k for standard one with 45k miles and a perfect service history. Put a set of Nokian winter tyres on it last year, and it was unstoppable. It's been on them ever since! Been through two MoTs with a set of wipers the only cost. Zero mechanical issues.

Don't do many miles in it, but best drive I had all year was 12 miles up and down a hillside farm track in Highalnds a couple of months ago. Great car, no driving aids, think I'll keep it until it drops!

Actually, I take that back a bit. A quick look on auto trader shows a few newer, less miles but without the PPP for similar money. Personally, I would not pay more for the big wing (which will be aftermarket and probably leak into the boot) and PPP, but instead get a slightly newer car.

You can get a remap anytime and get 270bhp...

Ah, didn't realise the wing is aftermarket. Is it only the STIs that have the wing?

There was a few special edition WRX's with the wing, but the vast majority are aftermarket and hence also need to be declared on your insurance (along with those non-standard alloys too).
