I was lucky enough to be there in 1985 at the age of 20 ! I remember talking to the great Tony Pond in Parc Ferme, top bloke, but if I think back the SD1 used to break half shafts when it when 'brow hopping' as the wheelspin on landing used to strip the splines on the shaft ! I think Michele Mouton crashed that year and we were looking at the damaged car in the Casino car park and saw 'souvenirs' being taken lol ! Cyril Bolton went well in a Manta 400 until he crashed into a wall right in front of us !! happy days :-)
Really do wish rallying could be like this now. You can see why this intensity and type of racing was banned though, the likelihood of a massive crash into the crowd is so obvious on nearly every corner. But my god the speed those guys took the country roads is amazing.
I think the nissan looks pretty nice and beefy!

I remember those days well and always been a Rally fan more than any other sport.I think the nissan looks pretty nice and beefy!
When Henri Toivanan died I was off-kilter for weeks.
I suspect that the modern camera angles, pan and zoom have a lot to do with the sensation of speed. F1 coverage is a prime example of how to send us to sleep!

I don't think I would have believed anyone who told me that 80's rally's were more exciting. Mostly because we're all a bit prone to worship at the group B alter. But that footage just goes to prove how epic it really was. Thanks for that.
Rallying fell victim to the same problem as most other race formulas - budgets went up and people's interest went down.Rallying (and BTCC) worked when it was your car (or your Dad's car or your favourite car) which was racing - not a super-high-tech shell which looks a bit like it.
Look at TP's Rover - aside from some replacement gauges and a rally computer it looks like any other SD1!
Motorsport needs to learn that there's a balance between technology and engaging spectators interest...
Lots more Michelle Mouton and Quattroporn here http://www.forum-auto.com/sport-auto/histoire-du-s...
(That's not Michelle Mouton porn) Her co-driver Fabrizia Pons was more ... shall we say ... bookish.
I think the word is visceral. You can actually feel the power and speed of those cars, the way they growl, pop and snarl.
ETA: To contradict my own words:
Well you would, wouldn't you? French girls, 1980s...

Great way to start the day, back when rally was really exciting. Dont know if its the cars, the drivers, the camera angles or whatever but its just not as exciting these days. And yes Michelle Mouton and her Co are very hot indeed. Typical woman driver though "I dont know why, it just happened!"
