Just a bread'n'butter family car, I know someone with one of these and he loves it.

I realise the last 2 examples posted by me have been, well, dull, but your criteria is quite strict therefore 4WD thirsty Jags have been passed over by me, in pursuit of common sense.
Huh... I guess I just default to Octavia when thinking of Skoda, didn't even think of a superb Superb.

I've just shown this to the wife.

"NEARLY A HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES?? And isn't that rear-wheel drive?"

She's not a competent driver (learner) but I'd have that in a heartbeat.
Roughly translated as 'Wife doesn't like it, so I am not allowed one'.

I think you need to recalibrate your idea of "Very fast". They are good cars, but heavy and when lumbered with an auto box it takes 9 seconds to get to 60. I don't consider my ZS180 to be a "fast" car but it's a damn site quicker than the V6 auto ZT-T.

Honestly, I'd rather have the 2.0 derv over the petrol engines. I do like the ZT but I had a ZR many moons ago and it put me right off the marque. I saw a diesel ZT today at the dealer with the Octavia, felt good but maybe just not quite my cup of tea.

Dude, you're making me want to kill myself.

The Jagwar is more interesting, just like the ZT though, I'd prefer a 2.0 derv for the commute. I'm pretty sure ill be taking a good look at the boggo 320d, the wife has come around to the idea.

did you show her my post? hehe

they're good cars and do get good economy; however, bare in mind if you get another car for £1000 cheaper but it's not quite as economical....£1000 is a lot of extra fuel. it depends what you want to be trundling into work and back every day in though, otherwise we'd all be driving £500 snotters!

either way, hope you're happy with whatever you choose smile

I've run out of inspiration. My lovely Panda is going next Sunday so I need to buy a car tomorrow.

Budget, up to 4 grand. I'll be covering about 12,000 miles a year, while not exactly a huge distance, fuel economy is a concern. The car needs to be able to hold an unnecessarily large double buggy as we'll have two kids under 2 come January. I've looked at everything from a 3 door Citroën C4 to a Saab 9-5 estate, I haven't got my heart set on any make or model in particular although I'll hunt down and kill anyone who suggests a silver Focus.
If you know you're going to have 2 babies to get in and out of the car from January... why would you be even considering looking at 3 door cars?

I went to look at this car today. Deposit paid, pick up some time during the week.

Is this a Pistonheads first? A "what car?" thread ending with the OP actually buying a car that was suggested?

The Mazda 6 is a lovely car, but be warned that they do have DPF issues, more so than most other cars I know of and they can be a right pain to put right.

It felt really good, certainly fresher than the Mondeos, Alfa 156s and the like I'd also been looking at, all of which had considerably less mileage on them yet felt much more tired. It was (for a bog standard diesel car) a superb drive. My previous experiences of diesel cars were generally negative, an old 2.3 Sierra, various 1.9 Vauxhalls, Tranny vans, Lagunas, Defenders and erm... Challenger 2 tanks, Warriors, that sort of thing. I honestly had no idea BMW were making engines on a different planet to the dervs I'd previously driven. I wouldn't exactly say I'm a diesel convert but I'm more than happy to own this one for a while.

Yeah, it is poverty-spec but I've lived in more spartan places, I'm sure it'll do exactly what I need it for and more.
