30mpg was/is the hope when being driven casual, but its by no means essential. As I've said, work is on my doorstep, so I think I was being a bit tight.

In work at the moment so unable to spend long enough on here to go through the ins and outs of everyones recommendations, I will be researching tomorrow afternoon smile

Thanks.

Right, just spend a few hours scouring the net. The big bargey Mercs are a no go (CL500s) just look too big and wafty. Not a fan of the Volvo either. I like the Imprezza, but not sure I like it enough to own one.

Now, throwing the mpg out of the window, I've shortlisted the following mixed bunch.

Merc C36/43 (I prefer the look of these over the later models)
BMW 330 Clubsport (prefer it over the standard model, I know its basically the same car)
Alfa GTV V6
Honda S2000
BMW Z4 (seem to be a lot of these with damage, do they have a handling problem?) Bit girly?
Porsche Boxster (2.7 or S) Again, bit girly?
TVR Chimera

The pre 2001 models get a preference due to road tax benefits. I know its tight but handing £450 over to the government for the privilege really grates me, but for the right car I suppose I could bring myself to do it.

The porsche would be the best drive, but it depends, they don't look girly when they're being driven properly.

Great car, but it will be pretty tatty at £6k and won't be that common in the more desirable M-Sport Spec. You should be able to get a few SE spec cars in that price bracket.

What about the Merc CLK430. 30mpg will be a dream, but good looking cars and you get a V8 smile

After many hours scouring the net I decided to go with the Alfa GTV Cup. Not quite as much oomph, but I love the look of it and the sound it makes.

The drive now looks like this, but only for a few hours more before the Porsche is taken away by its new owner.

I specifically wanted something newer, the 928 has scared me off old Porsches.

I took the GTV out for a great run this lunch time and have to say that the engine is absolutely beautiful. Not the quickest but it really does have something, and when you're pushing it, it sounds stunning. Definitely made the right choice.

And you get a load of spare cash to keep it running biggrin

Still, the Alfa is a very close relative, and the V6 does sound (just) better than the Fiats 5 cylinders.
