I'm glad this has come up because I cannot stand it when a Porsche is; "my bit of pork" or "my porker", ITS A PORSCHE and that's not Por-sha.

My Celica GT-Four was always just "The Four".
The Lotus is currently referred to as the "olymic torch"
The Saab is either "barge" or "lisbeth"

There was some massive wheelie spacker on here a few weeks ago referring to his Vauxhall Astra Nurburgring as 'The Burg'. Seriously, I wanted to stab him.
People from Ashington in Northumberland have been using this term for years on;y 'The Burg' means toilet up there. :-)

'teg' confused me for some time, I still don't know what a CTR is (and don't care), but I now know what a 'pina is but don't understand what the point of shortening the word by two letters is????

'ongs.

How about referring to the car by the model code.

[anorak voice 1]Oh yes, my E36/E40/E32 is the best thing ever[/anorak voice 1]

[anorak voice 2]Well, it's not as quick as my DC5/DC2[/anorak voice 2]

[anorak voice 3]Ah but my R35 will thrash all of you.[/anorak voice 3]

Model code is kinda handy. A 540i doesn't really tell me a lot, but an E39 540i and I know what you're on about. Similarly for M3s, etc. and then it's still a lot more informative than simply saying 3-series.

While we're at the BMWs, we have 1er, 3er, 5er, 6er, 7er, and though it's rare I presume 8er.

I dislike the abbreviations. Is it REALLY too much trouble to utter a couple of extra syllables?

Cannot abide; 'grale or 'rado. I always imagine them being said in a grotty whining twang like the lad who once told me he had "an ar esss tuuur-boh".

Monosyllabic TVR drivers often seem to write about:

"the Chim"
"the Cerb"
"the Griff"

Can anyone think of any other examples of truncated model names? I can only think of "the 'Grale" which very occasionally appears on here.
the Granny
the Vix
the Taz
the Tusc
the Tam
the Sag

And of course the Tiv.

Don't really see what the issue is though. Where do you draw the line? Would you expect me to refer to my little eurobox runabout as the "Suzuki Swift 1.5 GLX 5d auto VVT" or is it ok to just call it "the Swift" or "the sh*tbox"?

Likewise I generally affectionately refer to my TVR Sagaris as "the Sag" or "the slag".

Where to draw the line depends on the car in question, and how you refer to it. Coming up with an evocative (or just plain stupid) nickname for a stbox with a slightly powerful engine is over the line. Owning a Koenigsegg and referring to it as the 'egg' is acceptable.
