No. There is no money for it, not locally. Maybe a private company could fund it on a PFI (?) like CountyRoute do with the A130 - build it and then monitor traffic, and charge the HA/LA per vehicle. 2p a car or something, over 20 years. Blocking the road is counter productive imo.

The land was there first - why ruin it just because of humans and their refusal to use public transport etc. In my experience, build a new road and development alongside follows. Be it residential or industrial, it happens. And the big green spaces start to disappear and the beige areas start to merge.
Typical greenspeak, socialistspeak. Have a look at the A61 Dronfield bypass. Been there since the 60s. Nobody uses the old road as a rat run. The bypass has never "filled up" and the surroundings are as green as they were in 1950. That's one example, I can show you more. OpulentBob said:

If you can get rid of HGVs, a large part of the problem is solved, but the alternative route is via the M62 and MUCH longer. The M62 is busy enough as it is. Discounting that, this route is the only way from the M1/A1 west to Manchester, Liverpool and Wales.OpulentBob said:

The new road has passed through many "times of plenty". It's been on the board for at least forty years. I can see no way of modifying the existing route without demolishing Tintwhistle, Hollingworth and Mottram.I can't be coping with a quote montage like that so I'll just reply here.
No, I haven't been through there at rush hour, but I'd imagine it's fairly similar to down here - rush hour can easily add an hour on our busier roads. Down this way, there are a number of towns where it is quicker to go straight through the town centre than it is to use the bypass, in rush hour. Braintree, for example. And a lot of towns along the A13 - Rayleigh, Basildon etc. Rat-running is a big issue - again, down here anyway. One of the more common complaints to the council about traffic issues. Although I'll happily bow to your local knowledge, I really don't know the local geography up there. If there is no reason for rat running there then fair enough.
Anyway, we're agreed that the greenies are the biggest problem.

I used to live down a no-through road and people used to use it as a rat run. I was working with a neighbor who was a bit of a nutter and on our way down the road (after reversing for a couple of school run mums) we met the usual sporty Audi estate driven by some bloke who refused to revere two meters back to a passing place because it was muddy and expected us to reverse about 100 meters in a high sided, lwb van. After it was clear the guy would't move (arms crossed etc) My mate shouts "suit yourself you ignorant bellend" and locked up the van. We made our way back up the road on foot and had a brew.
Wasn't the first time locals did this and we all usually had a laugh about it at christmas parties including the local policeman who was fed up with excuses by motorists hooning down there which he'd stopped and then relished handing out fines or sending them back the way they came. fking marvelous!
