We pay the highest fuel tax in the world and have one of the worst road networks in the developed world.
If I pay this much tax on fuel, I bloody well want it to be spent on the roads.
It is being spent on roads, unfortunately on building new roads rather than maintaining older ones though. If I pay this much tax on fuel, I bloody well want it to be spent on the roads.

I have signed up! Geez, I was having a joke.
The reason we have this attitude is because of past experience. In other countries they would just smash the place up, we just do stupidass peaceful protests and the Government laugh at us.
I know you were!& you are probably correct! The reason we have this attitude is because of past experience. In other countries they would just smash the place up, we just do stupidass peaceful protests and the Government laugh at us.
Recently we had a vote locally as to weather or not to have a rubbish incinerator outside King's Lynn. Over 300,000 people voted against it and a petition with over 250,000 signatures was handed in to the Borough Council against it. Planning permission was passed two weeks ago. Just to know money talks louder than the will of the people eh?
The Government will never reduce the revenue from the VAT on fuel. They are stupid but don't have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot.

Look, fuel's expensive. There is nothing we can do about it. The gubberment got elected, and it's all tax tax tax.
A few people in donkey jackets in Parliament Square will make no difference whatsoever.
What an absolutely crap attitude to have; I’m not advocating mass strikes like many of the trade unions love to do. But if people did not challenge the status quo then the world would be a far worse place. A few people in donkey jackets in Parliament Square will make no difference whatsoever.
If enough of the populous voiced that tax on fuel was too high then the government would have to respond. But at the same time these people would also have to allow less spending on public services, an I’m afraid with the UK’s current general attitude this is something that will not change in the near term.
I for one would welcome less public expenditure (not including construction, for future investment reasons) but the issue is much wider than just fuel duties, and the assertion of what do we really want the government to be spending our money on.

They DO NOT CARE.
As the earlier poster said, I've stopped looking at my payslip. I just try to forget the thousands and thousands every month that are stolen from me to pay for the lazy, feckless and uninvited.
The only way out is to leave, and I have responsbilities here for now, so I have no choice.
Migration figures have gone up so it looks like many people are giving up and leaving.
Fuel is so essential it is crippling businesses and people with the current prices. It affects the prices of everything else you buy directly. I think if fuel prices came down the economy would see a quicker recovery.

At the end of the day the powers that be just don't care anymore. The motorist is, and always will be, a soft target. People need cars, to run those cars they need fuel and so by keeping the tax high they can ensure that they have a steady stream of tax cash coming into the coffers. After all most people I know still use their car as their main means of transport even though the price of fuel and car tax is so high.
Yes, protest if you want to and perhaps you will get the opportunity to get your views in the press but regardless, it won't change a thing. With the money we generate for the government and the green movement having their moment in the limelight motorists are a prime target for taxation in numerous forms.
Sadly the only way to show them they are on the wrong path is to actually leave the country and, let's be honest, it's a real travesty if those of us who work hard and contribute to society are almost forced out of the country.
As a proportion of income, we're not taxed particularly heavily compared to other western nations.
It's perfectly logical that the balance of what goes to comprise your taxes varies from country to country.
It's perfectly illogical to say because fuel is taxed less in another country that we're being ripped off.

Quite apart from the fact that it's still cheaper relative to wages than ten years ago. It's seen a sharp rise 2008-2010, sure, but not exactly unobtainium, is it? How about I share the prices I've paid since March 2011:
132.9 03/2011
131.9
133.9
132.9
130.9
134.9 08/2011

Hmmm.
