I can't explain it, but my TVR can do 'pops' loud enough to make pedestrians jump out of their skin hehe
Same here with my car. I never make it pop when I go past a bus stop, ever.
When I lift off I never touch the throttle slightly to make this happen too wink
Oh yes. Bored bus queue? Low gear, big revs then lift off and tickle the throttle as you pass. That wakes them up biggrin
Have to be careful doing that in the Caterham as the side-exit exhaust can leave toasted ankles if pedestrians are too close hehe Good for setting off car alarms too...

The Cooper S is supposed to pop and bang, even though it's a fairly mild version, because the exhaust is designed to promote it - not sure how they achieved it though. Probably just deliberately added a little fuelling on closing throttle to promote flash-off in the exhaust system. For real pops and bangs, you need to hear a highly tuned engine lifting off at high revs, Honda Type Rs that crackle and bang if you add a straight through catback exhaust with no silencing, and Imprezas / Evos and tuned up Celica GT4s crack and bang with an intensity similar to a rifle firing or loud fireworks. I had the pleasure of following a Celica GT4 ST205 with an N1 (typical Jap cannon) exhaust up a quiet-ish road one night, the cracks and bangs were mighty but what really impressed me was the flash of light from the exhaust every time the fuel lit up, it was similar to a very powerful camera flash bulb, very bright and intense.

Bit of unburnt fuel on the overun usually?

My Alfasud used to do it all the time. The Elise will do it if you change up at a high rpm. High being over 5,500ish.
My elise only does it when you come off the throttle, and engine brake. I live on a big hill, with a school at the bottom, so if I leave the house at the same time as the kids are on their way to school (so driving slowly) my car ends up poping and banging all the way down the hill smile

As far as I was aware, this is due to excess fuel entering the system? I know some car manufacturers now design systems for that very purpose! I even manage it on my automatic 7 series! Either put it in sport so it holds the revs longer and tap the throttle once I've let it off...or lock it in a low gear... Is it wrong that I find it so hilarious? Especially when people are walking the opposite direction, backs turned... biggrin

Popping, banging & flames in GTRs, Elises, Minis etc and modifying it to do so!! Well you all have a lot to learn as nothing Paaaarrrps on the overrun like a well used Morris 1000.

Lift of on a downhill run under a bridge and it sounds like the devil has just woken up. Get it right and you can drag it out for up to 15 seconds or so.

Is it sad that I could recognise a Morris 1000 on the overrun even if I was blindfolded? smile Something to do with that pea shooter exhaust I suppose.

I can't make them as loud as some, but I get some steady pops on the overrun on my Z3 3.0, I'll have to try applying slight throttle to see if I can make it louder. smile

K series engine?

Every k series engined car i've driven has always popped and banged on the overrun, most noticeable in 1st or 2nd st low rpm, when the engines not fully warmed up.

Great fun on my other halfs car. We're quite childish, and wind down the windows when driving multi-story car park to listen to the car burble away as we go down the exit spiral!

My Ibiza Cupra does it, rather loudly at times. After a, lets say enthusiastic drive, blip the revs to about 2.5/3k and it sounds like a gun when pops and bangs. Tend to get big flames too, turbo cars are fun!biggrin

Astra VXR does it too. I believe that under certain circumstances fuel is injected on overrun to help cool the piston crown. With the first cat in place you'll probably never hear it, remove the cat and you'll get it.

Not 100% sure but I've seen/read flames would not be good unless the car is fully decatted as it would imply raw fuel is getting that far ?

My mate's Astra VXR bangs, but like my old Cupra R it's more of a bassy "whump" rather than a high-pitched crack. As for it not being good for the car if it's not decatted, your car generally needs to be in a fairly high state of tune to get enough fuel to the backbox for real flashes of fire and light, but I wouldn't worry about it damaging the cat - the flames depends on how much fuel the car is outputting on a closing throttle, often a by-product of the tune of the car.

If you decat a car, any car, and add a loud exhaust you will hear it banging away all the time. There is a kid near me with a 1.2L Clio with the above mods and despite being slow as fk, it bangs like an old 1970s rally car!

Yeah the astra will bang but it will pop and "crack" too, least mine does. You do kind of forget it does it until someone gets int he car and they're like wtf is that ?
Notihng like the crack off some rally cars though, on the sunseeker last month they were proper loud

So I've been considering getting a used Mini and I love the Cooper S for its popping ability. However, cant really afford one at the moment as it appears quite thirsty (Supercharged version) Does the regular Cooper pop at all and if not, can it be encouraged to do so?

As much as I've tried I just cant get my diesel Golf to pop!!

As standard mine made some sounds, but I had it augmented somewhat when I had it remapped... Lifting off high up in the rev range can make some ludicrously loud noises hehe
