In all fairness, you would have to have had your head buried pretty deep in the sand to not realise it was all going to go pear shaped!

The most ironic thing about people complaining about fuel prices as if it's suddenly all become too much is that it basically hasn't moved at all in the past twelve months.
The nearby fuel station has gone up atleast 2 but 3 or 4 p a litre some weeks for the last month.
In the last week I've seen it go up a couple of pence too. Occasional small fluctuation, yes, but that doesn't mean it's not stable - I put this elsewhere a few weeks ago.

Prices I've paid for regular unleaded in the Midlands for the last year:

132.9 03/2011
131.9
133.9
132.9
130.9
134.9 08/2011
131.9
130.9
130.9 10/2011
134.9
129.9
131.9
132.9 02/2012

If this factor is taken into account those older more enthusiast machinary make PERFECT sense and will STILL be cheaper to run overall such are the prices of newer cars and the levels of depreciation in Europe. They're also allowed to complain if it makes others wake up to the socialist stranglehold government that got you into this conundrum in the first place.

The only thing worse than high fuel prices is misguided idiots who welcome it like Mr Gear and Xit Up. When I am emperor these will be the first to be up against the wall
Lucky then that fknuggets like you with no understanding of economics will ever be the emperors of anything other than your own excretions.

Our "socialist" government happens to be the Tory party. Not really known for their socialist tendencies. You could always vote for the "drop tax on fuel" party, but not even the half-wits at UKIP think that is a good idea, so where does that leave us?

It leaves us where we are right now. Half the UK population whinging about the cost of fuel but doing fk all about it, and the other half not caring because fuel has become a smaller part of their household outgoings than its ever been.

+1 and I thought it was the market that controlled the price of fuel anyway. Since you made this contribution, the Saudis have opened the tap and the Americans have released some of their reserves but it doesn't seems to have lowered the price as quickly as it went up when the word "scarcity" hit the headlines.

Stop shouting to the referee for help and respond like Mr Gear did "Lucky then that fknuggets like you with no understanding of economics will ever be the emperors of anything other than your own excretions."

A lot of people did actually. It was pretty basic common sense that you couldn't just keep funding bigger and bigger mortgages to push house prices higher and higher and make everyone feel rich for ever, it had to implode eventually and it did.

Unfortunately so many people were having such a good time re-mortgaging in the belief their house was magically creating wealth (and the government were happy to let them since they were busy spending the money and making the economy boom) that those that saw the writing on the wall were simply shouted down.

It's been said before, but the only thing we learn from history is that no one ever learns anything from history. smile

Don't know if the price of crude has jumped recently, but (some) petrol stations whacked the prices up because of the recent increase in demand.

The amount of tax goes up when the price goes up (same as anything else that VAT is charged on...)

Fuel is always to expensive until supplies are threatened, at which stage most of us will willingly sell our Grannies soul for a tank full. Funny old world !!!

Actually it did from $104/barrel in mid December 2011 to $125.28/barrel as of yesterday. The government has not raised the percentage duty on fuel. It may be, as you suggest that the retailers also put a percentage on with the clamber for fuel.
