In law, I think the driver (or should they now be known as "operator" as they aren't really driving in this instance?), will be liable for any incident that may occur.
That is how I guess it stands, but I can foresee there being a case or two (likely in the US) where the car company is sued for causing an accident.

Is there any point in comparing a pilot's responsibility when using 'autoland' to that of a driver using 'self parking'?
I think that would be used if it was the best option, visibility was next to nothing, and the choice to use a feature like that would be because it would be the safest option.
If the pilot did it 'cos he was getting a coffee and there was a failure, he'd be the one in trouble for a bad decision.

I could argue that the best option might be to divert if we are talking about safety.

Probably better than than most people who don't practice it every day - you see them get half in then shuffle back and forth repeatedly to get it closer to the kerb one wheel up on the pavement, and the other wheel 2 foot out into the carriageway.

Oh I can see it now. The headline '(insert car manufacturer) automatic parking feature to blame for parking incident'.

Then underneath the picture of the stoney faced old trout with her arms folded. Behind her, her long-suffering and equally stoney faced husband desperately trying to lay the blame at anyone else's door but their own.

Their boggo cooking hatchback will be lurking in the background, slightly out of focus.....

What happens when they have to drive something which isn't fitted with 'auto park'. You have to wonder after they've relied on it in a previous car. Dumbing down at it's worst I say.

yes If you are able bodied you should be able to park without this feature, and if you can't you shouldn't be driving.

You don't. That's the point, the car steers itself, you are not deciding where it goes.
Doesn't matter, if you are in the drives seat YOU are in charge of the car YOU decide to use the self parking not the car.

In jest I fully agree! biggrin It does seem comical. But is there any truth behind it? As far as I can tell this is the first mass public device like this. And it's something you as a person don't fully control.

e.g.

If the system say all ok and it then steers you into something... how were you to know it was going to do this? Covering the brake pedal is one thing, but if it was that easy there'd never be any accidents ever! Which quite plainly isn't the case.

The car might control the steering of the vehicle, it doesn't control the speed or braking of the vehicle, as that is still done by the driver.

I would also think that there are plenty of warnings in the owner's handbook that remind the driver that they should look out for hazzards, and that they are ultimately responsible should anything go wrong

Sounds like me on a good day.

Even after a few years in London I'm still in awe of the way the natives can park in minuscule spaces. That and somewhat baffled by their inability to make progress on an even slightly rural NSL road (swings and roundabouts I guess...)
