BMW z3 2.8i turbo conversion.....?

I wouldn’t bother spending any more than that. There is more power to be had from the 2.8 – change the cams, exhaust etc. But ultimately just diminishing returns as you spend more to get less.
The 2.8s were detuned from the factory to comply with some German emission laws at the time. They fitted a constrictive inlet manifold and a few other bits to the intake system. The intake from the 2.5 is far less restrictive and will gain about 15% power on the 2.8 and allow it to run as it was designed. It’s pretty much plug and play.
If you look on the E36 websites there is LOADS on tuning the 2.8 engine, although I wouldn’t suggest spending money on anything other than breathing mods. Better to spend the cash on making sure all the stock components are tip-top. If you still want more power after that, look for a different car.

Its already fitted with the manifold from the 2.5, it just hasn't had a remap as yet....
So it running a bit lumpy, with some flatspots. I've spoken to DMS and they rekon £495 +vat and it should be much nicer...

There are still some cheap things you can do to let the engine spin a bit better, remove aircon, lighter pulleys, lightened flywheel, fan delete etc.Its already fitted with the manifold from the 2.5, it just hasn't had a remap as yet....

As I say, there are loads of threads on modding the 2.8

I doubt I could get more than the £2800 I paid for my car, probably less. As I said, its a nice motor, and I dont want to spend £6000 replacing it. Seems like the turbo conversion would cost me more than I had anticipated so probably a non starter.
Maybe Pistonheads is the wrong place to ask about car tuning and upgrades.....
academic now I guess, but a car with a book value ITRO £3k with 3k of turbo-conversion will be lucky to see it's book value at resale... the £6k option is probably more cost effective, depending on your plans.Maybe Pistonheads is the wrong place to ask about car tuning and upgrades.....

To anyone with half a brain cell yes.
Lost on you then. Not enough power and terrible gearbox, but then it's probably perfect in your eyes as everything flawed seems to be
The Smart Roadster is a sports car irrespective of what you may think of its power output or gearbox. Reminds me of that 'tard on here a few years ago insisting that the MX-5 wasn't a sports car because it wasn't quick enough! Missing the point!
Plenty of turbocharged sports cars: 911 turbo, 944 turbo, MR2 turbo, 200sx, F40, well-trodden t/charged MX-5 upgrade path, etc., etc.

But the point being that there are many driver focused turbocharged cars!
I believe some Japanese chaps rustled up some OP modifying to get bog power increases out of your car is possible but expensive to do properly.
As much as you love it have a look at some other choices of vehicle for what you could sell yours for and go do some test driving
Just remembered the VX220 Turbo as well.
It's all in the delivery: big turbo with a sudden wave of torque and it's going to be tricky to balance - smaller turbo with more gradual feed in and it's going to be much easier to drive. Appreciate that some will prefer the purity of the n/a engine though, and I agree that it's going to be expensive to turbocharge it properly. It won't be worth what you put into it either...
