Starting to lose hope trying to sell my car...
Discussion
I helped sell 3 cars for family and friends between Xmas and March. All of them had a years ticket, some good points and some bad points.
Each one was accompanied by a well written (at least by my own standards), brutally honest advert that included rust/dents/scrapes/broken switches and what did and didn't seem good, detailed all the work done in the last year or so including bulbs/tiny jobs and also detailed any service history/receipts that were with the car.
They were priced just above what the seller was happy with accepting and at a middle of the road, for that type of car, figure.
I made sure that I had a phone number prominent in the adverts that would be answered. I wouldn't want to buy a car via email so won't try to sell one the same way.
All of the sold for a figure the owner was happy with, in less than 7 days and in each case to the first person that viewed the cars. All done via ebay and each one utterly painless. IMO if someone can't sell a car they want too much money or are not making the process as easy as possible for potential buyers.

Any advice on shifting this car?
Yes. Ebay auction starting at 99p, make sure you exclude 0 feedback bidders. It will sell for what people think it's worth.Recently I bought a car that needed a major service, discs and pads all round and four tyres. After doing that work I put 10,000 miles up in 8 months. Sold it and took a £400 hit.

Replacing consumables is part and parcel of running a car, it don't add to their value.
Absolutely. I expect to spend money on a car every year just to keep it running. It's not an investmentOP - I say this a hundred times when I come to sell cars - If you price it correctly, it will go eventually, if you price it slightly cheaper than everything else, it will go quicker, if it's too much, it will take some time.
I always price my cars at least £100 cheaper than anything else of similar condition etc, and I always get a quick sale. I'm prepared to take the hit in the pocket to save time and effort and stress in it taking ages to sell.
Just to add - got my MX5 for sale ridiculously low at the moment on PH
Advice?
Trade it for a MX5 and then attempt to sell the MX5 at the start of November. That'll work
But seriously, every car has its price. If you want to sell it, you'll need to take a hit.
You bought it at max demand, min supply, and are trying to sell it at the reciprocal point in the seasonal cycle.

It's a petrol 4x4 with high miles you bought for £1,200. I'd keep it until it needs something big and then scrap it.
The £1,000 market is flooded with more desirable cars than this - and at that price most folks are prepared to have some fun/take a risk. There isn't much fun in a petrol CRV.
If you list it with no reserve I reckon you'll get £600 on fleabay.

Had one question asking for my phone number as they would like to buy it. Gave them my number saying that any questions would be best asked over email as I can't answer at work and rarely get a signal at home. No reply or call.
You need to be able to take calls if you want to sell it. Deluded said:
Well yes, obviously.
I buy a car riddled with faults and needing work. Spend a fortune on it, have a change of circumstances and try to sell. Why would I expect to sell it for less than cars which need loads of work?
Because, as you mentioned, everyone seems to describe thier cars as 'mint' or similar.I buy a car riddled with faults and needing work. Spend a fortune on it, have a change of circumstances and try to sell. Why would I expect to sell it for less than cars which need loads of work?
If I am looking at cars at this kind of age/mileage I just think "they are all going to be st"- Ill just get the cheapest one as it is pot-luck anyway
OP, I've just viewed your advert on ebay.
Two things, no phone number and you state the car is located in a different place to where your ebay account is registered. Regardless of other issues those two things would set my spidey senses off enough to find another similar car to view, you're not competing against other CRVs on the market but other estate cars/off roaders less than £1500.

The former rather than the latter would worry me more. But, with both of those combined I would just move onto the next advert.
It’s not like they are hard cars to find.

If someone wants to call me, they can email and ask for my number first. Not putting my number on ebay means I wont get random people phoning to ask what my lowest price is, then hanging up when it's not what they want. Had it before. Not going to do it again. If you can't be bothered to email me then you obviously aren't that bothered about the car. But, with both of those combined I would just move onto the next advert.

Also, car is listed in Cheadle, Staffordshire. Ebay account is Listed as Stoke On Trent. Cheadle is approx 4 miles out of what most people would class as "Stoke On Trent". Not really wrong is it?
