RE: Aston teases DBS replacement
Discussion
DBS replacement? when on earth are they going to get round to a DB9 replacement? seems like it's been out ages now!! far longer than the DBS obviously...why replace the newer model, but not the older one?
on the whole i like the looks, but not a fan of the fussy wheels or that black front splitter/apron, i hope that disappears!

New Aston DBS design meeting.
Design Chief "OK boys and girls. We need to design the new Aston Martin DBS. The board want something on the desk by Monday"
Design Minion "Don't worry boss, I'm already on it"
Shows a pic of the new Aston DBS drawn on the back of a fag packet.
DC "Err it looks very similiar to the previous DBS except you've messed around with the front bumper and lights a bit to make it look worse"
DM "Yes boss but it's worked out ok for Porsche for the last 40 years and besides I've just got a text message from Wolfgang, the Porsche designer and they've already finished theirs and want to know if we are up for a round of golf and a few bevvies at the 19th hole"
DC "SOLD"

The Virage is essentially the DB9 replacement, but the DB9 remains on sale as a sort of Aston Value range alternative. Peugeot are doing this very well at present; the 206+, 207 and 208, three entirely different generations of car, are all on sale at once : http://www.peugeot.fr/voitures/on the whole i like the looks, but not a fan of the fussy wheels or that black front splitter/apron, i hope that disappears!
As for this story, why did it take so long days for it to hit PH? It was on the Autocar site nearly a week ago.

If this is the best Aston can do then Jag are laughing all the way to the bank.
Overall not a bad evolution of the DB9/DBS theme. Front end is a little unresolved but I guess this is in part to meet the pedestrian impact regs.
Pricing will be important, will need to kept under £200K othwewise base price will drift uncomfortably close to the Ferrari F12 which will offer significantly more performance if the rumoured 573bhp of the Aston is correct.

I think they kinda have already, with the Virage. I think they shot themselves in the foot calling the AMV8 the Vantage though - the DBS should have been the DB9 Vantage. It'd be like Porsche calling the next Boxster the GT3, or having a base-model BMW M3 with a 1.8-litre diesel engine.I suspect the DB9 will be quietly phased out, the Virage will become the new flagship (a similar overlap happened back in 1988-1990 with the old V8 and the V8 Virage), and whatever this gets called it'll be the modern equivalent of the V8 Vantage.
In terms of Astons that need replacing, I think the AMV8/V12 is the one that needs it the most. It looks practically identical to everything else in the range and nowadays just blends into the background.
I quite like the idea of something really aggressive, hunched and muscular, like a high-class modern Mustang or Camaro in the way that the old DBS/V8 was back in the '70s.
The DB9 is a stunningly beautiful car but it's 8 years old now, this latest DBS work-over doesn't look as good as the original car IMO.
I quite like the rear glass and wing treatment, the C lights are okay if a little fussy as is the vent detail on the doors. But what are the front splitter and those wheels all about? Foul.
