I don’t know what you mean here, you are possibly being a tad condescending to people who don’t really like it or prefer a 458 over it.

And it’s easy to ‘get’ - see above statement, you don’t have to be a certain type of sophisticated person to get the car

Given the choice I don’t know if I would have one over a 458, it would be a close call but I wouldn’t make a ridiculous statement like:

"I would never, ever buy a 458 under any circumstances. But I hope to own a MP4 12C"

By this statement you are alluding that the Ferrari is rubbish or all its owner are knobs, that it’s tacky, or show-offy? But the MP4-12C is all the things the Ferrari is, only in a slightly different way.

Most owners of both of these cars would be knobs and show offs who know nothing about the car etc – I met one [MP4 owner – well, hadn’t collected the car yet] who thought it was 4WD! But not all of them are. And by owning a MP4-12C does this make you more sophisticated than someone owning a 458?
I don't mean to sound condescending, that is not my intention, but I do think that the Mclaren's delights are very different to a Ferrari.

Someone said that the McLaren is "the supercar for people who don't like supercars", and I kind of agree with that. I would never own a modern Ferrari - the whole red and cream, F1, Tifosi, sell-me-a-baseball-cap and "wave my arms around shrieking a lot" Italian thing, does absolutely nothing for me. I just don't want any of that. Other people love it, using phrases like "passion" and "drama" to describe Ferrari.

These are the things people criticise the McLaren for lacking. But I love the MP4 12C precisely because it does not have those things ! And maybe some of the early adopters of the Mclaren did not like it because they expected it to be like the 458, only to be disappointed that it is not.

This is why I have no desire for a 458, or any envy toward anyone who does have a 458.

I am not judging people who want or own a 458. It's their choice, its up to them. But I personally don't want the drama or the image "baggage" that goes with a modern Ferrari.

If I want to drive a car that has "passion" and "drama" I drive a classic.

When it comes to modern cars to drive every day , I favour function above all.

This is why i do not regard the Mclaren and 458 as competitors. IMO anyway. smile

t was the lifting feature more than anything I was thinking of to be honest. That is nice to have in our speed humped roads we all seem to have these days.
Yes , the crafty gits are putting that as an option though . It won't be standard equipment .
I think mclaren special ops ( what a great name !) could probably retrofit this .

Is this the yellow or something different?

I hope that's it.

What a stunning colour.

I want this car so much to a point that looking at it actually depresses me.

The bulk seem to hang around the 170/180K.

I seriously wanted to love this car but I just can't. And yes, I have driven one. Its like being the ginger kid, you know your parents kind of love you but you know they just look at you with bitter disappointment. Still, plenty of people love ginger.

I do get what you are alluding to here a but the MP4-12C isn’t exactly an subtle car that blends into the background either. It’s just marginally less flashy than a 458. When you see one on the road it stands out big time.

I do agree with your other points and [if I was lucky enough to be in the position]
I also wouldn’t want a red 458 [or 430 for that matter - I'd take a black one either model] due to the reasons you mention above.

But I also wouldn't diss a 458 owner due to Ferrari's perceived image. The 458 is a totally amazing car and some of its buyers but it for this reason, how many I don't know :-)

Saw my first MP4 12C the other week in London when I had my nose pressed firimly up against the window of the McLaren dealership. What a sight to behold, and just as breathtaking as the red 458 I saw going up Southwold high street last weekend.
There are only two things that bother me, and I know Ferrari had issues with early 458's, but if the guys at Woking are so good and supposedly have such anal attention to detail, why weren't these mods implemented before the car was released for sale. It surely isnt asking too much these days to have a sports car's engine that is responsive, or a sat nav that actually works. And ditto for the switches that refused to function as designed.

The second fly in the ointment is the plasticky looking appearance of the McLaren badges on the bonnet and wheel centres. Wouldn't a machined and painted metal logo have been more appropriate on this expensive engineering masterpiece, rather than these moulded plastic affairs that remind me of those cheap badges that you used to get with certain kids comics back in the 70's.?

Its refreshing to see a supercar maker taking its customers seriously in respect to retrofitting solutions back into existing cars sold for free. It’s great because it doesn’t mean the first batch of MP4-12C loose value and appeal few years later on as inferior specs or ‘on the road prototypes’

The man responsible for tuning its exhausts needs hearing-aids or something because I still think it sounds uninspiring whatever the speed.

I'm guessing this is sadly a typo? However the thought of a 1200hp McLaren does excite :-)

One question- how did you open the doors before they added a button? Saying "Open Sesame"?

Shouty, garishly coloured sports car posing at the circuit.....

Subtly coloured, everyday sports car minding its own business with the white vans

The merchandise pedlars with their day-glow baseball caps and Fathers day bundle packages

The merchandise pedlars with their lovely subtle high end sweater.

As i associate the MP4-12c with the dullard, anal, whining old grey suit wearing mearchant that is Ron Dennis i have to say I wouldn’t go anywhere near one.

A 625bhp power boost would give it 1217bhp! Let's see it race against a Veyron Super Sport!

Try living in rural Suffolk. There was a guy who owned a lilac Diablo somewhere nearby about ten years ago. Other than that it's all lovely old classics.
