But if your going with a group of friends, pass round the hat and go for it!

Getting a license and a converting an old coach was one of my plans about 10 years ago, and probably will be a regret that I never did in another 30. biggrin

S8 was a great one. A mate had one a few years back and I thought it was a fantastic car.

I think we can forget anything Japanese or Ford/Vauxhall, I'm allergic to front wheel drive. I'm starting to figure that the 5 series is probably ideal for this task.

Hi Pistonheads.

I'm in the market for a shed, well budget £2000 to open it up a bit, and here's what I need:

It must be fairly large (to carry 6 Scuba Tanks and other equipment) and capable of driving me through europe so good sized engine. Fuel consumption is not an issue, and neither is reliability as long as it's not a smouldering bomb. I'm looking for suggestions on how to make it as interesting as possible, throw in your ideas!

My initial thought was a range rover or luxo 4x4 which is perfect for the gear, however it's boring. I've thought 540 or 328 estate as there will be alpine roads involved, however they're also pretty dull. I saw a series 3 XJ6 on the classifieds which I found very interesting, the boot would be a proper pain.

The car's pretty much a throw away, to be sold or scrapped in october or kept in the garage for another trip if it's interesting enough so something interesting with good resale potential then the budget restriction doesn't really apply.

What have you got for me?
Your driving through Europe and you aren't bothered about reliability!!

If you want something interesting, then have a look at a P38 Range Rover. Sort out the suspension and she'll be good to go smile

Some kind of fast Audi quattro estate could also be quite fun smile

Quite nice - just a shame about the Halfords special wheels and teflon tyres.

In white, holes in roof or aerial bases, one previous owner, regularly maintained/full service history, from auction, with change perhaps.

Well worth a punt!

And it'll be only 3-4years old, no emissions data on the V5 so only basic £220/yr tax.
AutoTrader has one ... thought you were kidding.

Not sure about the tax disc though - DVLA has it down as 250g/km.

Only one answer: Mercedes E280 estate, W124 vintage. Wafts along very well.

Some good suggestions in there for sure. In a true PH manner, I ignored all of the requirements for what I need in a car and picked up a 997 C2s the other day. I guess the scuba tanks aren't coming then biggrin

The 500 mile detour on the way home through quiet scottish backroads confirms that this was the right choice after all biglaugh
