Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA founder, one of the richest in the world drives a 240 estate. Read in an interview where he said he will probably switch to a skoda fabia when his volvo finally gives upsmile

If I see a gut in a 250GTO i will assume the guy has a lot of money...So it depend on what car...

Legend.
yes

As said, people who earn a fortune sometimes drive cheap cars, maybe they don't see the need to drive something more exotic/prestige when there happy with what they already have.
The Ikea boss allegedly drives a 1993 240.

I drive an 06 Ford Ka, which I inherited. At the same time, I inherited a lot of other stuff and this, without wishing to sound too much like a dick, have an 'above healthy' bank balance. I've considered all types of cars from a GT86 to a GT2 but I just can't bring myself to do it. I recently splashed out on a new motorbike as my fun toy but, as far as cars are concerned, I'm just happy just appreciating them without owning one. There's also a quietly smug kind of satisfaction in knowing you could without actually having to or needing to do it.
Totally agree with this

On any given day I could drive either : Range Rover Sport, 911GT3, Audi A3 diesel, Elise, Élan or 10 yr old Ford Ka rust bucket. So I'd say no doesn't reflect anything!

Urban myth, he has a few S classes and Porsches as well. Not nearly as tight as he portrays.

Its a cool story to claim someone has a stter but is wealthy and that is the exception rather than the norm. Drive round Sandbanks/cheshire/esher etc and big houses generally have nice cars outside.

I know more wealthy people with expensive cars than average cars.

I do know one guy who drives a Camry and has $10m house. Along with a helicopter and a plane.oh and a $200k patek. Just not into cars but doesn't hide his wealth.

Why not quit PH then? If you can only muster the enthusiasm to drive around in a free (inherited) Ford Ka, despite having a self-proclaimed 'above healthy' bank balance, then your most likely not a car enthusiast. For 'smug satisfaction' read 'miserly procrastination'.

^^ A Ka can be bloody good fun!

Much rather have one than an Audi A6 TDI Sportline with 19" alloys.

Nope!!!

A few towns over there is a small council house with a new Dakar yellow M3 outside it.
In my town, in a relatively normal house the bloke has a DB9 and a RR sport.
Where my buddy lives in one of the new nicer housing estates (but not super expensive) there is a bloke there with a 430, R8 V10 and a Gallardo. He has a double garage so there is always 1 sitting outside it.

On the other hand my dad does pretty well these days and runs a 1992 XJS and an old 320d. Combined value of around 4k smile
Outside the mega nice places in my town its usually full of bottom spec diesel Audi's the french family cars.

So its not, it depends on what people usually choose to spend their money on. Some people spend the money on the house as they dont care about cars, others buy a modest house so they can afford the cars. Priorities are different.
I dont think there is a way to judge about how much someone earns/lifestyle by their possessions.

Maybe he likes bikes and just sometimes strays into other sections to laugh at willy waving people in cars?

After all, everyone knows fast bikes are for real men. hehe

Because I love cars? I also appreciate art but don't have many original works by da Vinci or van Gogh knocking around the house.

I'm seeing a trend here. I know someone who's the director/producer of a number of films you'll all have heard of, has a CBE to his name, and recently changed his ageing Volvo for a Prius (and has no other cars). Some people have no interest in cars whatsoever, or even the idea of wealth as a whole.

Some of the richest folk I know run round in battered old cars.

It's usually the folk that want to seem rich, that are in the Mercs/BMW's. Usually diesel, usually on lease.

If I leased a car I'd go for something with a 'premium' badge, not to impress people but because the deals are often better and it seems bonkers to lease something less nice at the same money.
