£100,000, good god almighty. For what?
For a big luxury car with a big V12 or was it a trick question?

My first thought too. You would have thought perhaps 25, or even 12, but 15?

Great work PH, a story about a BMW with no pictures of the factual car, I hope BMW sent over the tea bags and coffee for your office with the brown envelope.

Love it, but feel I need to pick you up on something;

Perhaps understandably given the British fondness for luxury diesels......

There is no such thing. A loud clatter, (doesn't matter if it's inside or outside), is the complete opposite of what's required for luxury.

One respect but they don't drive like what a £100k should do IMHO.

And having driven by friend Arnage twin turbo and Flying Spur (both available at a year old for similar money) BMW really ought to take a long look at themselves.
Still, when you've really only got a Merc S class and Audi A8 as new competitors....

What does that mean? How should a £100k saloon drive? Could you explain your experience of £100k saloons to put your comment in context (not being driven once in somebody else's car)?

BTW the Arnage is not available as a year old car. Since when did manufacturers price their cars against second hand cars from other manufacturers?

Honestly, if I won the euro millions I'd probably still keep mine as a run about. Probably.

No need to get your coat mate, it does look nice, not no Dubai spec. This person who said that is obviously the silver car sheep type dude.

Together with the typically awful 'orange peel' BMW paintwork, they just look cheap.
And they most certainly are not.
.
I have seen some that have stunning paint, and others that look like it is applied with a roller, one of the bosses here had a five series and that was liek that, he wasnt bothered as it was a 520d with the M garnish.
I see the orange peel effect on cars from most manufacturers. All appear to produce variable finish quality. Our (recently stolen) X5 had a fantastic paint finish.
I think this is to do with having to use water-based paints.

Saving the environment... giving you crap paint. Most of the 7th gen Honda Civics had it, especially the flat red paint which was also softer than cheese.

The fit and finish of the 7 series is not comparable to the S-Class, A8 or even LS460 or XJ imho. And the slightly sportier feel of the 7 series doesn't offset its generally crappier accomodations (and styling, but I realize this is personal and subjective) and interior. And my opinion comes from having driven a 7 series a few times, as well as having lived with an S-Class (W126 & W221).

The new A8 is gorgeous imho, long and low and wide but still lithe, and while the shape of the XJ is awkward looking at the rear head-on and from the side, overall its a very attractive car. The W221 S-Class is attractive as well though its been around for 6 yrs or so now, but ever since the Bangle era started and then ended, BMW's 7 models have lost their lustre imho. Such a shame as the E38 was gorgeous as well as a fair bit better to drive than its competitors (performance-wise). Not sure how they've sold but if my anecdotal experience is any indication, not well at all compared with Jag, MB, and Audi competitors.

Other than the obvious 'because it's a 12 init it' response,
is there any other reason for wanting a 12 over an 8?
What does the 12 offer that the 8 does not?
Possibly a tad faster to 150 mph and maybe a slightly
different engine note, is all I can see.

On the converse side are far worse fuel bills and larger
maintenance and depreciation bills.

All the modern standard production BMWs are limited to 155 mph
anyway, so the fact that even a six cylinder 330 will get
to 150 mph without too much trouble, surely makes even an 8 cylinder
look a bit pointless, never mind the 12 cylinder.

Tried speccing one up on the BMW cxonfigurator the other night incase I won the lottery. Was disaapointed even with my fantasy limitless budget. Boring colours and boring interior options, didnt like any of the wheel options either.

All I wanted was dark red leather and a nice shade of BRG.

Sorry BMW but my fantasy budget will be going elsewhere.

Something quite majestic about a BMW V12.

But, for the sake of being old school, I'd take an E32 750iL, in Diamond Black with cream leather and some genuine 17" staggered Alpina wheels!

I actually spend time in these cars and your statement is just wrong. The fit of a 7 is easily equal to the Mercedes and Audi.

Edited to replace reference to "utter bks"

Totally disagree.

The new A8 just looks like an over-inflated Audi A4. It has no 'wow' factor that the current S Class, XJ and to some extent, the 7 Series still has.
