a bit more humble, but we had one as a family car when I was growing up, the Peugeot 407 nor the 508 in my mind never matched the 406 in design.

Quite like the Fulvia. Such a pretty car.

Instead of pissing on Lancia's hertige with these useless rebadged US abomitations, FIAT should make Lancia a boutique marque for some exclusive premium motors. Like the stunnig remake of the Fulvia they presented almost 10 years ago. Also came with great rear lights IMO.

BTW, rationale for the ribbed light cluster as per Mercedes was that they improve safety since the brightness suffers less with increasing levels of dirt on them compared to normal "flat" rear lights. But that's coming from the same company that tried to justify the fins on the W110 by describing them (to the more conservative German public) as "marker edges" designed to help rear visibility for parking ;-). But at least they had the decency to try and explain unconvetional styling decisions back then.

Now they dare not, and I imagine it is a bit difficult. How could you tell an Audi owner that the single frame facia thingy on his car is actually a device to aid motorway overtaking by suggesting presence that does not hve to be backed by actual substance.

I agree! I have a question, though. How do the US-spec ones differ from the European version? They look the same to me?

I heard it was for a similar but slightly different reason - to be visible with a build-up of snow on them.

But then again, this is the internet.
