Interested to hear the result of the PAS experiment.
When I had mine I listened to (well, read...) pages of discussion on MX5Nutz about whether the unassisted rack was actually any better. The conclusion I remember hearing - and this is by no means gospel - was that the car was always designed to run PAS and the unassisted rack was a cost-saving measure that I didn't add a huge amount.
Really fancy another MX-5, and I agree with the comments above that a crisp winter's day with the smoke rising from the cottage chimney's is definitely the best time for a top-down blast.
...alllegedy, a converted PAS rack is meant to be better... But that feedback does come from the US who are famous for straight roads When I had mine I listened to (well, read...) pages of discussion on MX5Nutz about whether the unassisted rack was actually any better. 1. America has bendy roads, and nice twisty race tracks for track days.2. My MX5 has a de-PASed PAS rack and I'm happy with the weight when parking (no too much effort even with A048s and I'm a flipper handed cripple) and very happy with the feedback and feel.
3. The de-PASed PAS rack still works well enough for a dab of oppo at 70mph (picture taken in England by the excellent people at Doristars):
Without PAS there is no chance of boiled the fluid when driving in a "spirited" manner. If you don;t do drift / car control / autosolo and you are not Ken Block, you will probably be fine.
I have the UK peasant spec rack, works fine. Driving some sorted JAP spec cars with PAS leads me to agree that the PAS rack is the better fit for the car, but its not enough of a difference to bother doing for me.
Mines going back on the road in December, finally decided that life's boring without it, my E46 330 just isn't very involving. But it is much better for motorways, moving stuff and people etc. Yay for cheap second car insurance.

I used to boil my PAS fluid on track all the time. I now keep the level at 'minimum' on the dip stick and have no issues.JamesHayward said:

I'm sure they do, although might look a bit odd?

If the roof is up, the storm had better have a name!!
excellent saying!Stick with manual roofs, less hassle
This topic has popped up just as I'm pondering the same thing, this will be the first winter for me n my 5 so I wasn't sure about weather to tuck it away or not. We can get some pretty bad snow up in the north east of Scotland but some of the pics/feedback on this thread are making me feel a little better, suck it n see me thinks....
