I know someone who got rid of an Audi S4 Avant after being mugged for the keys the second time. He didn't think his family would be impressed by him being killed for his car.
Yup, that's the sort of thing I'm worried about, but I'm guessing the Audi S4 Avant was newer and worth a fair bit more than £6/£7K.

Leave the keys near the door nice and obvious. Then they won't butcher you but I can't see it happening for the vintage car you're looking at buying.

Ferrari or Rolls perhaps but in the global scale of super cars an oldish Beamer isn't really worth the hassle.
There was a thread on here in the last few days where a PHer's house was burgled for the keys to his 10 year old MINI.

Similar, or lower, value to the car the OP is considering.

You can't say that because it's not worth £25/50/100k or a Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche (delete as appropriate) that somebody won't want to steal it.

Hey, if you are a born worrier then if it wasn't this, you would be worrying about something else. Buy the car you want, take reasonable precautions to keep it safe ie locked and alarmed etc and just move on with life.

Someone on the M6 motorway was killed today as they were involved in a large pile up. Puts things into perspective huh?

Thanks all. Sounds like I'm just being daft then. Annoyingly the 325i I spotted today sold instantly. Maybe a good excuse to look for a 330i instead ;-)

Cheers.

No-one going to state the obvious? It's a BMW, they don't need to burgle you for the keys in order to take the car laugh
the issue has been fixed now.

Is it silly to worry about being burgled for your car keys, and for that to affect your car buying decision? I think I'm a born worrier - reminds me of that thread on here "are you a worrier". I'm after a Bimmer, only a lowish end one (325i M Sport 2006), but I know some cars are targetted by criminals "to order" and they might be a bit more nasty than your average car theif just trying their luck.

If I lived somewhere a bit nicer I probably wouldn't worry, but this is Leicester city center ;-)

On the one hand I think I'm being a prat, on the other maybe it's just good to be cautious and should just get a flippin Mondeo or standard A3.

What's the world coming to when you have to worry about stuff like this!
I`d target a 335d if I was a thief wink

Look at it the other way, why live your life not doing stuff "just in case?"

I keep my car keys out of view of windows and doors, but downstairs in view. I know of someone who was jumped outside a gym to try and get his rs4, credit to him he fought them off mind you!. However later sold it as his wife also used it.

I used to live slap bang in the middle of Leicester city centre (overlooking the market) and used to park a bright yellow R26 in a unlit unsecured carpark at the back of the shops where all the local homeless would sleep And rummage through the bins, never had a single problem and didn't really worry about it.

Thats what insurance is for

I wouldn't say it's silly.
I haven't left home yet, at uni atm, but I plan to put docking great secure doors on my house when I'm settled.
Maybe similar with front windows. I'd rather prevent break-in's completely than have alarms/trackers etc.

No it's not silly to worry, or no it's not likely because its a 325i M Sport 2006?

A bright yellow Renault you say? And this surprises you?

OP, have you looked round Leicester recently? Go to any of the asian areas and you'll see German metal galore, in no way is a 3 series going to stand out.

Stop worrying and enjoy whatever car you want. No point stressing about things like this within reason, it would be understandable if you were concerned about parking a Fezza on the street or something.

A lot of the cars I report stolen through burglaries for keys are completely random crap. Not so much stolen to order, but stolen for the thrill of it, perhaps the burglary was for the xboxes and they take the car to carry it, or maybe they wanted a x plate mkiv golf. Doesn't seem to be much of a standard.
Best bet is get a decent alarm and light on the front of the house, persuade them to do next door instead.

I moved back into my widowed Mum's house a while back, for many reasons (ahhh, and that!)

But it's a house that sits in what's regarded as a fairly affluent place to live, near the South Coast.

At the time, I had a nice Porsche 911, which was kept on the driveway, and I also received one or two emails from fairly trustworthy PH'ers that said 'Watch out - there's been a spate of higher-end cars going missing from your neck of the woods...'

I did worry, yes. But it was insured fully comp, and had a tracker on it. I was more worried about my Mum's safety than the car's though, and to that end I used to leave the keys in a bowl by the front lobby inner door. I instructed her that, if I wasn't there and something nasty DID happen - i.e anyone bursting in or doorstepping her for the car, to pick up the keys and hand them over without any complaint or restraint.

I also emailed Google and got the pictures of the 911 sat on my drive deleted from the 'Streetview' pics.

Fortunately, in 4 years of ownership, I was lucky enough to not have any problems.

I do sleep better at night these days though, with a fairly worthless car parked out front!
