er, actually I wasnt citing an example where there is a vehicle in Lane 2 and in lane 3! I was hypothetically musing that a driver who takes such an attitude would be just as likely to sit in lane 3 as lane 2. Thus, if I want to avoid undertaking I am held up by somebody elses poor roadcraft, unless I want to indulge in a spot of dodgy driving myself. Anyway, its all semantics. Just take a look at the highway code
but the op was talking about lane 2...
Under taking is wrong, 70mph is legal,
Weather you or me like it frown
Or in fact, stick to it laugh

I will hold my hand up to sitting in the middle lane with the inside lane empty in the wet in some circumstances.

Various worn-out roads have grooves worn into them by HGVs. Those fill with water when it's raining heavily.

I've aquaplaned a Ka at 60mph in the wet because of that (on the M27 up portsdown hill).

When it's very quiet (i.e. pretty much only late at night) and I come upon an MLM I start orbiting. I think my record is about 8, and they did finally get the message and move to lane one.

The other method I use is to slow and pull level when overtaking and keep indicating left until either they move over or I would be likely to impede someone else.

But it is immensely annoying. Despite widening the M1 between J25 and J28 I have failed to see any improvement in travel time due to the tts who sit in lane 2 simply migrating to lane 3 and the net effect of spending several million pounds on a new lane is effectively zero.

I have done this before, it really fks them up and drives them nuts sometimes!

Would only do it if I was bored and the traffic was light etc.

007 XVR. The highway code says on motorways 'drive on the left unless overtaking' A simple rule, which only needs an IQ of 1 to understand. Thus you drive in lane 2/3 which speaks for it's self. Driving in a central lane when a lane to the left is empty is an offence of driving without due care and attention.

Came around the M25 from LHR last night to Kent & the lane & light discipline was nil. Quite a few ambling along in lane 3 or 4, I was knackered & keen to get home so just stayed in L1 & kept going. Probably 1 in 6 or 7 got it & moved over but the majority didn't. Also lots of lane closures at around 10:30 which some didn't see until the very last moment, they certainly hadn't seen the admittedly poor signage.
Lots of Foglights on fronts &/or rears when it was misty as well.

But on todays roads now we have 3/4/5 lanes is silly wink

Today noone will be done for being in lane 2, which today makes sence.

My point is to the people saying they get pissed of with people in lane 3 doing 70mph, that then have to under take! at over 70mph...

There is so much beening done wrong on the roads, I just cant see way this and a fog light on will get (some) people so mad ?
Iam more intreseted enjoying my drive, and gettitng from A to B then spending my time getting angry.

Or just update the highway code for modern roads and cars.

Unfortunately not.

I drive in the US a lot and all that happens is it seems to absolve people from having to change lane at all, so you end up spending miles and miles behind a "pack" of cars sitting side by side with their cruise control set with imperceptible differences in speed and no possibility of passing anything. Think of it like 3 lane elephant races where the elephants never pull in at the end of the manoeuvre. Its no substitution for lane discipline.

Genuinely lol'd at that biggrin

I hate middle lane hoggers an am somewhat "outspoken" on the road, however I'm not sure I'd have the nuts to take the piss to that extent laugh

Was thinking the same.. argument settled in one post IMO. Regardless of speed, all is right with the worlds as far as I'm concerned if everyone is travelling faster than the vehicles in the lane to their LHS beer
