I guessed as much but it's a meaningless description given that most of the big names have perfectly acceptable budget 'sub-brands' e.g. Continental/Barum.

My golf cabrio has the 8v, as you say easy 40mpg on a run 350 + miles to a tank :-) it does almost exactly the same MPG as my wife's 1.6 focus', but the golf is far more relaxing you can get really lazy with the gear stick.

It had 17s on when I got it, struggled to get 35mpg and 280 to a tank so don't be tempted by cheap big alloys

What you aren't understanding is the connotations the branded tyres give. Yes, there are perfectly acceptable sub-brands, but the person who owned this car deliberately chose to forgo the sub-brands. They ponied up for the branded tyres despite the additional cost, which implies to my mind they are the type of person to ensure that any maintenance was done correctly.

If the maintenance was done properly there isn't likely to be a stack of problems stored up, ready to catch out the latest owner. So I'd say it was a very meaningful description. When buying a car I check for 4 of the same branded tyres, if it has them it meets my test* as to how a Car is likely to have been looked after.

  • *(I go out of my way to get Michelins for my cars despite the cost, I also service them and fix them properly even though some would baulk at spending £s on what isn't far off a banger. Maintaining reliability is more important for me than knowing I'll never get my money back when it comes to sell. Buying a branded tyre to me = the owner cares about maintenance despite the costs, which is a very good thing in my books. :-) )

So which are considered branded tyres? The OP hasn't told us what are on his Bora.

They're not a bad cheap snotter. I bought one as a stop-gap last year for £620, that had HiFly tyres on the front, they were comically crap in anything but hot dry days. I remember scaring my mate as I went round a big motorway roundabout in the wet on full lock thanks to the understeer from the crappy tyres.

It wasn't reset at the last service, I phoned the dealer that done the servicing to confirm the stamps in the book were legit.

4x Continental premium contacts, all look just about new. Not the best, but not exactly ditchfinders.

I had one of these a few years ago, not a bad steer at all. Mine was the 2.0 8 valve too. As mentioned already, not a powerhouse, but respectable for cruising. I had those wheels as well in the pic above, the outer rims got really badly pitted.

I had a derv 130 in the same colour, it's not the best car in the world but I bloody loved every moment that I owned it. Got it on 75k and sold it at 120k still on the original clutch turbo and injectors. Who said diesels blew up after 5 mins?

Was a great car! Although the headlights can only be likened to candles in jam jars

picked up the same car but a year newer about 8 months ago for similar money. No issues in the past 8 months. Quite a reliable and fun car to drive.

Unlikely, unless it's very light traffic.

Here it is, with the typically drab Scottish weather.

Not as shiny as it could be, it's riddled with swirl marks.
