I- best I could get was 38mpg and a cruise at 70-80 sees about 30-32mpg - according to other owners on the Jag forums the 4.0 V8 can do that.
Sounds ok to me for a big 3 litre petrol.

Just because V8 owners reckon they get that doesn't mean they do.
Worth bearing in mind that my best was taking the hypermiling extremes i.e. shut down at traffic lights, and gentle throttle use around town. Normal use was more like 22mpg round town.

The V8 owners tend to reckon on 32mpg 'on a run' and about 20 round town so not much different. I know one owner might be talking porkies but its unlikely for loads to be.

The reality is that if you used most of that power most of the time you'd end up banned or dead just like most higher powered cars.

I rarely used the rear seats on mine so never noticed any problems with them.

So really the MPG will be the same as the Subaru. Which I now rarely drive enthusiastically.

I wouldn't bother personally.

A 4.0 petrol implies pre-2002. Pre-2002 has the urinal shaped interior and crap suspension lifted straight from the Lincoln LS which is as engaging to drive as any other American barge.

The 2002 facelift brought many mechanical improvements which transform the S-Type into a beautifully balanced car. The post 2002 is, IMO, as good to drive as the E39 5-series yet rides better. It also dumped the Ford autobox for ZF which is a peach and brought a far better interior.

If it's not a 2002 or later, forget it, IMO.

Are you fixed on an S-type? You can get a good x308 xj for 3k.

Same money, more sir.

While it pains me to talk down a big 8 cilinder engine, i'd think the V6 would suit the car better. To me the S-type is the epitome of stylish british waft-mobiles (yes, i'm nuts, i just LOVE the looks of the S-type, i'd have one in a heatbeat), and i think the smooth character of a V6 engines would suit a cruise-mobile better.

Really?? I'm paying £406 a year on my R. Cheapest quote was £340ish but that was without certain add-ons.
I'm 22.
My R costs me £1200 per year.
im 20.
Suspect the non supercharged 4.2 will be much less again.

I'd be looking at a £3k 3.0 if it was my money. You might even find one with a manual box which leaves less to go wrong.
+1

£3K gets you into facelifted territory so thats the one i'd go for.

Great to see some other young people driving what many regard as 'old man' motors. I was 24 when I bought my XJ8.

I agree. When SWMBO decided she wanted something a bit swisher back in 2010, she ignored the various BMWs, Mercs and Audis I took her to see, and plumped for the one car I thought she wouldn't, a 2007 S-type 4.2 Sport. It turned out to be a truly great car. 22-25mpg average, up to 35 on a 380 mile down country run. Reliable, refined, and just a lovely place to be, it's just been traded in for it's modern equivalent, an XF 5.0 V8S. smile

I took my Uncle's 1999 4.0 V8 from Colchester to Marbella a couple of years ago, didn't miss a beat. Still running fine down there now.

Cheers thumbup

Back to the OP, if you can, as already said, go for a post 2002 3.0 or push for a 4.2 V8 smokin

Love mine to bits. 2.7D remapped to about ~250 brake and massive torque. 38mpg overall with a range of 26mpg (hooning)- 43mpg (wafting), quick enough not to be an embarrassment and a delightful quiet, civilised cabin.

It swallows big fast A-roads and French autoroutes with great aplomb!

S-Type 'R' still sounds appealing, though...anyone want a swap?

And another.

Hammerhead's 4.2 was glorious, if a bit quiet after my X-type wink (3.0 with fruity pipes, a lovely engine)
