ETA: It's quite interesting that the MINI is good though, because BMWs tend to be amongst the worst offenders in my experience; or at least were the first manufacturer to really put the effort in.
Such a shame that it has a thirst for oil like a 2 stroke...
hehe Our 2.0 TFSI Octavia is the same. Gets through about a litre of oil every 5k miles.

It's a Ford modern, turbocharged car subjected to NEDC tests, so that's to be expected.
FTFY. smile
yes It seems that it's very much easier to tailor turbocharged engines to the test than normally aspirated ones.
I'd like to know the technique for extracting decent MPG from a petrol turbo, because the trad technique of 50% throttle + short-shifting at 2500rpm to get into top-gear asap doesn't seem to work (IME) confused

Aft'noon all. For clarity the 'mid 27s' mpg is WITH the bike racks and, quite often, bikes in place. We'll do a spell without to see how it compares.

And in reply to whoever was asking about my old Subaru it was a MY95 WRX and I don't think I ever saw better than 25ish. JDM gearing probably didn't help.

Cheers,

Dan

I'm with GranCab; nearly £30k for THAT? Ricky-dooglies, as my gran used to say.
And Kambites, I'm sorry but I don't know anybody who easily gets early 40's in a Cooper S; SWMBO had one and even on the gentle rural runs around here struggled to get 40...
Back to the Focus, I wonder what is spend the £30k on instead; new or used, petrol or diesel etc.
Probably a 1yr old-ish Merc E350cdi Sport.... Different fish I know but a better way of spending that £30k IMHO....

I want to like Fords but don't like the current dash they all share, only model I would buy is a focus ST or focus RS, I still like the 1970"s 1980"s Fords more. wish I had bought a Escort RS turbo last year could have had a good MK3 for £3,300 now £4,-£5k and there were 2 mint black XR3 that were £1,850 , now worth a lot more ,3 door cosworth now mental money

Sheesh, are we going to have this comment every time the Focus is featured??

This test car is loaded with options. You can get a brand new ST hatch or estate from the broker websites for not much more than £20k.

My GF managed 37mpg on a free flowing m5 in her ST2 hatch

I'll have to try a prod on the stability control (obviously when shes not in it!)

But you are saving yourself the cost of an oil filter every 20k

Wife's Cooper-S 1.6 turbo is bang-on the claims made by MINI. Hits early 40s mpg no problem.

My 2002 impreza wrx was bang-on the claims made by Subaru. My wife got 34mpg out of it on one tank to my amazement.
Bet the mini doesn't do that when hoofing it which I suspect is what these guys are doing with the ST. The urge to plant your foot and ride the wave of torque is great.

If you pootle I bet the st does mid 30's tops mind.

almost entirely off topic, but is that Aston Hill car park I see?

That would also explain the swankier metal in the car park

Surrey Hills, but likewise the swankier metal! If you're an Aston Hill regular you'll be seeing the Focus there too before too long - local to me and one of the reasons for my enthusiasm for getting the bike racks on!

Dan

I understand Mountune aren't far off bringing out an upgrade package that can be fitted at selected Ford main dealers. They've had their test mule at the 'ring recently.

I've had a MK3 ST-3 hatch for just over 8 months now and I average around 27mpg (according to the dash display - haven't actually checked to see if it is accurate). Just got my ST-3 back on Friday after some eejit decided to use the back of my Focus as a brake approaching a roundabout.

I love the new Focus, my wife has one and it's a really nice thing to drive. Not an ST but 1.6D Titanium which averages mid 50 mpg, goes well enough and is very quiet on the motorway. Also, the doors have a reassuring "thunk" when you close them, it has a great (DAB + sat nav) stereo and cost pennies to run.

I wish people would stop bashing Fords. They may not have a premium badge but I'm old enough to remember when Audi, BMW and even VW were premium products and sadly now they are not.

Parked my 'old st225' next to a new one at the local Ford dealer recently and the salesman said 'keep your one, its nicer' and this old 5 cyl has managed 39 mpg today, driving like miss daisy. On average I manage 27 mpg with 300 bhp , so which bit of this new car is called 'progress'?

Yours has been tuned to make 300 though

Is the weight the same?

And what about that high driving position??

Yes, MP 290 from Mountune and still does the same MPG as the new car. I am sure that the new model has the same height in driving position. Was done for crash height, I believe. Also the fuel cap doesnt look like an after thought like the new car. I 'did' consider one, but the huge bonnet to front end gap looks shocking. The seats do look a very nice place to be, but there are better cars out there for the money. Also as others have stated, the towbar bike rack I have cant be fitted, although cant on the earlier car too, but could have cured two issues with one car. performance and practical. You cant beat the 5cyl warble either.

Yes, although they do start from around £14k if that is too expensive for you. Or even you can buy an old one to suit your budget for less than £1000.
