I had the 1.4 Forte version in white. Absolutely cracker of a car, raw and revtastic. Brilliant in the snow and easy to work on.

Radio went off when I put my foot on the brake too...always made me laugh.

F503 CKP where are you now... Traded against a G reg 1.6 205 GTi which made way for a K reg 1.9 Gti...

Good times!! Remember when Citroen electric windows and a brilliant vacuum sealed slide sunroof meant you'd "made it"... hehehe!!!!

Fun to drive like cars just aren't any more....

Drove a one-off(?) E reg convertible AX GT, apparently professionally built for a motorshow at some point in time, for a couple of months in the late 90s. Even faster with no roof! Bits kept falling off the dashboard but seriously good fun - even if it had been customised with blue and cream leather seats...

Had a Green 1.1i 'Memphis' edition as my second car. It seemed to go like stink compared to my 4-speed 1.2 Nova Merit which got stolen and I discovered the luxury of power windows and a fifth gear. Used to spank it everywhere from cold and the engine never threw a wobbly.

The bodywork was flimsy as hell though, a 'big boned' friend of mine from college left the suspension lob-sided from sitting in the passenger seat too much, and he broke the passenger door by opening and closing it too much... Fun times, miss that car.

7k for that though? i'm sure some tidy 106 GTI/Saxo VTS/Clio Sports can be had for a fraction of that, in similar quality and quicker too.

Happy memories. Had an '88 GT and then a '92 GTi - both wonderful, wonderful cars. The 1400 TU was such a sweet and torquey unit. Build quality on the early car was hilarious though. Later cars very well screwed together.

F344 TBV and J771 STF - both gone now I think.

My first proper performance car (the GT), but mine was on the standard steelys, same as the rare Euro AX Sport 1300 twin carb TU2, similar drivetrain to the 205 Rallye.

Going to be keeping my eye out for a GT now, but a bit cheaper than this for me.

Unfortunately I was never wealthy enough to actually own anything remotely modern when I was younger, but a mate of mine had a GT in 1989 from new. Great little car!

He traded it for a brand new 5GT Turbo a year later. Those were the days!

My dad had a white one when I was a kid. I remember how fast and raw it was compared to some of the cars my friends' dads used to drive (stuff like Escort 1.6 and the like), but he only had it a few months, said it didn't feel safe!

His best mate had a normal one, then got some special edition one (GT500?) with leather seats.

The GTi supposedly wasn't a patch on the GT.

Had one of these and ruined it with modifications! It was absolutely mint, and easily one of the most fun cars I owned. The Peugeot TU engines were brilliant, bulletproof and so high revving.

Never got the 'lift off oversteer' thing myself if you're getting this in any of the usual suspects mentioned on PH then you're doing it wrong.

I could say I get massive oversteer everytime I accelerate a rear wheel drive car around a corner, is that a design floor of the car, or a moron driving it?

Whilst I agree that they have some nice calls for sale, their prices are IMHO highly speculative and are not representative of the true market.

Hold on doesn't Harris still have one of these? Wonder if he'd like to comment on the subject.

Similar, it's 205XS he has isn't it?

Same engine.

The GTI came with an iron block (or head - cant remember) & more weight up front.

Those sugesting clio sports and the like are completely missing the point - these AX's are true lightweights with little in the way of safety. I dont think £6k is too bad if the car is to be locked away in a collection.

I'm afraid I'm a reason for their being so few. I killed my 1993 k reg in 2006 by stripping it out for use as a camper van on route Cornwall. I overloaded and thrashed it mercilessly until the engine over heated and exploded spectularly! Sold it to the RAC man who collected me for £50 for scrap and I stripped out everything of value I could, including fuel and the tax disk!

I learnt more about cars from that AX than almost anything else! Was so easy to pull apart a very clear design actually.

I had 2 of these, the first was a G reg (G177MLG) I bought in new on 1st August 1989, it was a facelift version like the one in the ad, A year later it seemed a good idea to buy a house, so I sold it and bought a fiat uno45s - what a mistake

I kept that for a year and bought my 2ndGT it was an '88 F plate (F645XPW - i think) which I kept for 3 years They were both awesome cars, the first was probably better - the facelift had bigger wheels (I think the original version were 13 inch wheels) and tweaked suspension

Awesome! Not seen one of these in ages, my first car aged 18!! well after having part share in my mums 1.3 golf GL!

Mine was a met grey F reg, had 89K miles on when i bought it, but it was so fast! if i remember it was booked at a 0-60 of 8.4 secs which is pretty quick, i remember my mate had a 1986 Fiesta XR2 (had more power 96hp and was a 1.6) and my AX would out drag him every time!! mind you brakes were utter rubbish! i remember it doing around 115mph on the max! lol

so much fun cant remember the full reg something like F9xxEKH loved it, bought it for £1450 and sold it for £1350 6 months later.

Sold it to buy a Toyota Ae92 Corolla GTI after nearly buying a escort RS turbo on a H plate.

If only i knew what would make money, but then i used my cars properly and enjoyed them so wouldn't have changed it.

A mate of mine bought the GTI version think it was a pre CAT one and it had 100hp he swapped that for a Clio williams at the time, the good old days of hot hatches.

This one is serious money, and i doubt the right investment it seems fast fords are the way if you want to make some cash on your purchase.

I do fancy a 1979 RS2000 escort.....hmmmm

Great little cars my first rallycross car was an Ax Gt they had terrific handling and great over the loose surfaces and bumps .

Also had a couple of road going Ax Gt's one black one identical to this one featured. Tthey were economical, nimble and quick for a 1.4, never had any breakdowns with them just minor niggles.

The Gti was a fair bit heavier than the Gt hence not that quicker lack of weight was everything with these.

IIRC, the AX had a plastic bonnet and boot - and outer door skins and/or front wings? - because Citroen was obsessed with reducing the car's weight in its pursuit of high mpg?
