Seriously?
Well it does also meet all the criteria I was looking for but ..well yes.

I heard him confirm it did actually do 38mpg on a run, heard and saw that is has a nice neutral ballance in the bends and saw, heard it being rung out to the redline and looking deeply satisfying whilst also out pacing the more powerful rs3. Thus proving it performs as well as the figures.

The price was just the clincher.

Hmmm I actually didn't realise it had that. I thought you were joking originally. That will really offend me if it does do the fake m5 malarkey frown
See, I've always thought along those lines too, but from your first response when you didn't know about that, enthusing about how good it sounds, does it really matter that some of it is coming through the speakers? Surely the grin on your face is the important thing and to hell with everything else?

A very bold move I must say, can't imagine parting with £30k without even having a test drive. eek

However I wish you the best and hope you continue to enjoy the car.

I plan to get one in a few years once I finish my degree, save up and the prices come down to £15k(ish)

An awesome car indeed, but the best sounding BMW road car? I think I'd struggle to put it in my top 10!

Still a great car regardless of how the sound is produced.

5000 miles in and I love mine more every time I drive it. It gets so much closer to perfection than anything else I've ever had. The soundtrack is much better with all the windows down - plenty of pops and bangs and lovely straight-6 noise smile

It's like a macbook air, you're not going to be disappointed with buying it blind. Some things just are good.

Nah, it doesn't matter at all. Maybe when your bored of the straight 6 sound you could fit one of these for a V8 effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLs8YcWMIx4

Nothing wrong with a fake dump valve either, as long as it makes you grin....

It pops and bangs from the factory? That must be forced artificially surely? How did BMW get the thing type approved if it is backfiring under normal operation?

It's not a backfire what this happens, it's unburnt fuel in the exhaust igniting. Yes, it can be done artificially using electronic control, the Bini Cooper Ss do it. It probably only does it in sport mode.
