Don't know what you guys are laughing at. The pick up looks like a fun practical way to get to the dump or B&Q for the weekend activities biggrin

Exactly!

Just imagine, by the time you reach the tip you wouldnt have to worry about whatever you put in the back... it'll be smashed to pieces and scattered all down the road!

I'd run one for a year, then maybe a Caterham, classic ford for a year, TVR the next, mix it up a bit. Work through that list of 'must haves / must try' motors.

Even you described it as "special" wink

Personally I'd have a Tiv or Z3M Breadvan over the M3 or 996 for all the reasons others have mentioned.

Come on 300bhp/ton - even I think that is a hilarious suggestion that seems nowhere near the OP's brief!

However OP, lots of good suggestions in my two threads from the good people of PH (including some genuinely good uns from our very own Yank tank lover):

And for the record, I frikkin love my weekend Porker - a convertible really is the best way to travel sometimes having spent last week watching RAF jets fly overhead whilst driving the amazing roads around Snowden!!! biggrin

Here we go! Red and in budget. Half the people on the side of the road will probably think it's Ferrari as well:

OR, something completely different....

I'm picking you may want something a bit newer?

If you want to play the idiots game you are way out in front if you consider the M3 a sport car in the first place.

Not too mention the op is missing the word sport or sports completely. FFS

In defence of 300, OP did state:

"As snooty as it sounds, I don't want a small "drivers" car akin to an MX5 - they just don't interest me. I want something with a decent amount of grunt and which will put a smile on my face. "

His suggestion does fit with that, even if a bit leftfield.

Well excuse me, it was completely fking obvious he wanted a truck from the OP. This time you are so far outta the ballpark it's untrue rofl

Ain't no fkin' ballpark neither. Now look, maybe your method of choosing cars differs from mine, but, you know, a truck, and a 996, ain't the same fkin' ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fkin' sport.

Whilst I do like the M3 and have done since they came out, I think the Porsche would give you far more "sense of occasion" as a weekend treat/toy? I'll get flamed for this but the M3 is "just" a BMW, along with all the other millions of them out there, albeit different under the skin.

I've driven a few BMWs, 3s and 5s, not masses, maybe half a dozen, and the only which lit my fire was an E39 M5. An E46 330Ci, whilst no M3, left me utterly cold - a soulless place to travel, IMO. Similarly, a run to/from the Alps in an E60 530 (or 535? can't recall) diesel was comfortably despatched with clinical efficiency, but was otherwise unmemorable. Get a Porsche!

They're not //M-cars though and that is the difference, as you seem to have found with the E39 M5

The E46 M3 is usually the default answer to these sort of questions for a good reason, it's a great piece of kit. Ubiquity seems to put a few people off, but that doesn't take from the fact that it's a highly entertaining steer and much more than just a commuter car

Saying that, I agree with 300BHP. An E30 M3 would make a great weekend car! smile

I think a m3 is something special a 996 is more a GT car with sporting hertiage.

I would go for the M3 as to me it would be more special.
I think the 996 is far more special.
An M3 is a (admittedly very well) tuned rep mobile, whereas the 996 is an 911, one of the best drivers cars ever to have graced the face of the earth.

Out of E46 M3 or 996 I would choose E46 any day of the week.

The only 996s I like are the very very late ones in grey / Carrera 2 / manual. Saying that the 996 is hardly a super car. Unless is one of those late ones has a cheap feel IMO especially the interior

E46 M3 I would be looking for CS / Manual which is very rare / practical

A 34k 2003 facelift Converible M3 recently sold for £12k

Other options
Z3 M Coupe (S54) less than 150 built
Z4 M Coupe / Z4 M Roadster
TVR for the noise but ste build quality
Lotus Exige ?

Using an M3 or basic 911 as a weekend car would be a complete waste of its talents, IMO. They both sacrifice an awful lot of driver enjoyment in order to be practical, comfortable cars.

If you don't subscribe to the "performance through lightweight" sort of ethos, the first place I'd be looking would be TVRs.
I run a V8 M3 as my daily & I agree with this, an M3 is a very capable car when you are in the mood but when you aren't it can almost be described as boring imo

My old Cerbera was a more exciting more involving drivers car in almost everyway & feels special just looking at it or sitting in it & that's before you even start it up!

An M3 as a weekender just wouldn't get your juices flowing much the only thing I like more about the M3 is its easier to slide & genuinely has an excellent chassis but think of the difference of how you would feel if you opened the garage to see a nice TVR in it or an M3 it's a no brainer... the M3 is a 3 series the TVR is a heart pumping thrill a minute beast!
