Everyone speeds!
Anyone who says they don't are telling porkies.

There's probably only the 'off to the hairdressers' brigade that stick bang on to the limits other than that no one keeps to the limits across the whole of their drive.

Did I read that right, you do 30 in a 40 zone...............?
What's the issue with that if it's not safe to do 40? It's a limit, not a target.
yes You did read that right smile I know plenty of urban 40 limits where I'm frequently down to 30 for safety reasons. Most are pretty much identical to 30 limits, with pavements, bus stops, driveways, playgrounds near the road etc.

I should swiftly add that I also know a few 40 limits round my way that used to be 60 and in my opinion should still be 60 - they're big wide roads with excellent visibility and only the odd driveway or pub with good sighting round them. Ridiculous.

I had to read it twice as well!

Where in the UK is there a 40 zone that in good conditions that isn't safe to do 40 on a regular basis?

A lot of 40 and 50 zones probably used to be nsl , until the numpties who find watching where they are going and anticipating what might happen ahead too dull to handle stated crashing for no reason!

I break the speed limit when I feel its safe to do so, if that makes me a bad person then feel free to score internet points by having a dig at me.

Anyone who claims to never speed is either a liar or a robot.

Note that I said 'urban 40'... I know of quite a few that really should be 30 limits. One used to be in the village I live in; the road is identical to all the other 30s in the village, but up until recently it was a 40 for some odd reason. There are loads of kids about here and it just wasn't safe to do 40. They've now changed it to a 30 like the rest of the village. That sort of thing is quite common round my way.

Good point. But the OP started the thread with the question "does anyone speed all the time?" and seemed to be suggesting he routinely broke speed limits, which I commented on. A very different proposition from judging every road situation and occasionally deciding a higher speed is safe on this occasion.

I am (honestly) very very careful in 30s and 40s - if I'm going to fk my insurance up or get points (never had any in 29 years) I'd be fking spewing if I got them for some crap like 35 in a 30. Not going to happen. 85 in a 70 - fair cop.

Don't agree, for 20 years I drove on a NSL road that is wide and straight with no schools or kitten factories within 10 miles, then all of a sudden they make it a 40mph road, I still drive on it at 60 and it is a perfectly acceptable speed.

Same with all the other NSL roads they have dumbed down to 40 and 50mph, on the other hand there are NSL roads near me where you would have to be mental to drive on at anymore than 20mph.

I drive to the conditions and prevailing situation not rigid speed limits.

From experience the vast majority of 40 and 50 limits have been placed completely illogically.

I find that 30 zones are fine and often it's a chance for a breather. I can't really abide anyone who chooses to break 30. 20 zones are frustrating, and I imagine even more so for people with powerful cars.

NSL driving is all about the conditions, visibility and quality of the road.

Of course, being a law abiding citizen I stick to all speed limits rigorously.

This is the reality for 95% of the people here (I would imagine), most just can't be bothered to engage in this pointless discussion.

Speeding in built up areas is stupid. On back roads you take your chances. Fact is if you want to drive properly fast you should be on a track.

This ^, I wont put my, or others lives in danger for the sake of going fast, but I wont adhere religiously to the speed limits either. I tend to just use my own judgement on how fast I should go.

Wasn't there a really good thread on this forum about a year or two years ago titled 'how fast have you gone this year?' Pretty sure most of the post on their above 77 weren't all done abroad...

I would say that people should drive at speeds appropriate to the vehicle / road / light, and weather conditions, and try to use the golden rule of not going faster than a speed which will allow one to stop in the distance known to be clear. Just sticking to the numbers on a pole (which are all too often, illogically and subjectively set) is NOT a guarantee of proceeding safely.

I normally defend against 'PH has changed' naval gazing but I have been really taken aback by the way this thread has gone. Ten years ago 99% of the replies would have been "30's/40's no, everything else yes" or a variation of that sentiment.
10 years ago the 30s and 40s where legit speed limits that looked right for the road they applied to then councils got control of speedlimits and stupic things like stepped down speedlimits popped up, NSL > 40 > 30 over the space of 1/2 a mile because people would speed in the 30 limit through the village which felt a low limit given it is a commuter village and the road in question only has houses on one side.
