A3 saloon? WTF
It will sell like hot cakes in the US and China, it`ll sell like dead dogs here.Would love a Merc CLA.
I'd have had the saloon though. I used to like the 306 saloon, and the Polo Classic, and the post-Orion Escort saloon. Would have had a Sierra Saphire over the hatch any day. I even liked the Daewoo Nexia saloon, and Lada Samara saloon. The only one I can think of that I actively disliked was the Suzuki Baleno saloon.

This is just Audi bashing as usual.
Not really. There`s just so many cars in their line up these days. BMW are as bad and as has been said Mercedes will follow suit.
If you think about it a few years ago they had the A3, A4, A6, A8, TT with Avant versions of the A4 and A6.
Now they have the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q3, Q5, Q7, TT and R8 models and of course they have Allroad versions of A4 and A6, Sportback versions of the A1, A3 and A5 and cabriolet versions of the A3 and A5.
Going back to the A3 saloon, it`ll probably not be much cheaper than the A4 so I can`t see who will want a car that`s arguably less practical than the A3 hatch but has less interior space than the A4 saloon.
It`ll do well in the US where hatches aren`t as popular as sedans but I can`t see it being a sales hit in the UK.
I`ve owned several Audis and they`ve been OK.

Add in SE, Sport, Sline, S, quattro, manual, stroinc, multitroinc, Rtroinc, and a plethora of engine options and you have a truly confusing retail offer. Then you have the cheek to tell someone if they want an Sline they can have any interior they like as long as it's black!! (or pay £****** for exclusive)
Can't see the problem myself - it just gives the consumer more choice, not a bad thing in my book.
I'm sure they've done their market research in advance; if a particular model doesn't sell well they'll drop it, or rebadge it as a VW or Seat. It's part of their master plan for world domination!;) (a car for every niche.)

The real coup is that you think they're all totally different cars, but they're heavily platform shared.
I'd love to see just how many cars vag group make off what, 4 car platforms and 2 4x4's? Very cunning atrategy imo.
One of the first things to happen in '68, when BLMC had been formed, was a product planning exercise along these lines... 3 platforms from memory, covering all bases of the market .I'd love to see just how many cars vag group make off what, 4 car platforms and 2 4x4's? Very cunning atrategy imo.
The plan was rejected (utterly misunderstood ) out of hand.

Audi only produce 2 cars - "the sedan" and "the SUV".
They simply build them in a lot of sizes.
that's about the best way I've heard someone describe them! They simply build them in a lot of sizes.
But if you want a car sized between small and medium, do you go for the 'small medium', 'large small', 'extra-small large' or even the 'extra-large mini' one?

Thought this earlier, doing a wheel refurb of an A5 Saloon. I thought there was the A4 (saloon) and the A5 was there as a coupe and convertible (much like the new 3&4 series BMW's) What's the point of a saloon version of the coupe version of a saloon car?
Would sir be interested in a 6 Series GranCoupe? It's like the 6 Series coupe that's based on the 5 series saloon car, but with 4 doors Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
