Its Decided: I'm buying a EP3 R-type as a second car

I'm guessing it might feel like that with 3 or more people in it, but with 1 or 2 occupants it's absolutely fine, in fact it reminds me of the ITR. I'm guessing you'll agree with me that it feels different to a standard Civic though
The standard Civic is quite a firm ride in the back, but not too uncomfortable. The type R is back breaking though, and not even that fast. I was much more impressed as a passenger in the Mini Cooper S, surprisingly rapid car!james_gt3rs said:

We chose the Honda because it was a Honda and therefore likely to be more reliable and cheaper to run, but the MCS was definitely in the running.
Great choice, OP. I had one from 6 months old to 44,000 miles and loved every second. Truly one of the last great screamers but if you live on anything other than perfect roads I would highly recommend some softer springs and struts with a bit more travel as they hop like a bunny. Stellar engine though and very cheap to run. Just get a facelift as you'll have the xenons as standard.

They haven't mentioned about buying a 'fun' car.
OP - a CTR will be fine for what you want, and when driven normally will feel and drive like a normal 2.0 or even a 1.8 hatchback and return similar mpg and running costs. But that's the entire point of the CTR.
For this money if you are wanting a couple of alternatives. I'd say look at DC2 ITR's and RX-8's.
The RX-8 is a 4 door, 4 seater saloon car, that just happens to look like a coupe. But the plus points are it's engine is even more revvy and driver focused than the CTR's is, along with a long slung driving position and RWD.
The DC2 in many ways could be seen as inferior to the CTR, older, less rear seating room, smaller engine, less power. But this is missing some key points. The DC2 is a much better driver, I personally think it sounds better too, is in reality almost as practical as the CTR, but rarer and will hold it's money better, so becomes a better investment. And while it's older, it's sort of equal odds for this money as the CTR won't be new either.
Why did you exclude this from your response? OP - a CTR will be fine for what you want, and when driven normally will feel and drive like a normal 2.0 or even a 1.8 hatchback and return similar mpg and running costs. But that's the entire point of the CTR.

and a lot of blatting as and when required. Will be driven hard...
I bought an EP3 back in 2002, had it for over three years and nearly 60k miles. Almost perfect as a hot hatch, for me. No turbo, no attempt at luxury, great engine and gearbox, pointy front end, adjustable on the throttle, nice seats, steering wheel and gearknob, everything else just functional and efficient. The ride in the back was harsh, though, and there was a lot of tyre and wind noise on the motorway. I had the 1.6S version as a courtesy car, and it felt completely different. Soggy. Numb. Dull. More comfortable ride, though.

I've sat in the back of an 07 Civic Type R, and it had the most spine crushing ride I've ever experienced, wouldn't recommend it if you ever carry passengers!
Thats an FN2 though, he wants an EP3.Baryonyx said:

Not really. It's called progression.
Don't be so stupid, halogen lights have done the trick for years. HID's and xenons are nice but they are by no means essential. Not sure what your beef is unless you're one of the "omg brite xenons almost blinded me!!!!" crew.
I've loved the time I've had with my Type R, it's been rock solid reliable and an absolute hoot to drive when required. It's raw, but not horrible to drive when you aren't getting on it, the finish and layout of the cabin is much nicer than people give it credit for, but let's not beat around the bush, it's a car you buy for the absolutely stunning engine and gearbox. When you drive it normally, it's like any other 2.0L petrol hatch, then when you need or want the extra speed, you put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and keep your foot in. 5800rpm-8000rpm is just pure heaven.
I'll be sad to see it go, but it must leave to make way for a bike.

RX8s are dirt cheap and you'd get once that feels brand new for cheap as chips as everyone is scared of them. There's plenty of examples that last well past 60k, but as they're a bit different to maintain and there were a few problems with dodgy coils there's a fair few out their with terminal engines... however, get one and get the engine sorted and you'd have an amazing car!
