Bus lanes - i have no fvcking idea when or where i'm allowed to drive in one, so 9 times out of 10 i just avoid them completely.
that's a good point actually; instead of having a confusing sign it wouldn't be hard to have a red cross or a green tick connected either to a central system or a simple time keeping device.
Silly me read that as "central nervous system" and thought, "Crikey, that's a bit much!"

So I was watching a bit of Top Gear and happened to hear the comment about why do poor people need to get where they are going quicker.

Now I just want to throw this out there in the open....Why are bus lanes actually bus lanes? Could they not be VIP lanes for people who wish to pay lets say £1500 a year to use these lanes?

It would work the same as bus lane cameras, the registration is linked to your VIP lane staus.

Whether it would actually work IRL or not I don't know, but on the face of it, it doesn't sound like the most ridiculous thing does it....?
The one I use on my way home is a VIP lane, never seen a bus in it and despite the signs saying it's only in force from 16:00-18:00 there are always 100+ cars sat in a queue next to it while I drive home past them all at 18:10ish, so I figure it's a lane for those privileged enough to learn to read.....

You could be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention if you fail to use one when it's available. I have a friend who failed his driving test because he didn't use a bus lane when he should have.

I use public transport to get to work. Sadly takes twice the time but costs about a third of driving and parking. And yes I pay road tax on my car.

Joys of working in a town centre office with no parking, and an extortionate council who see fit to charge £1 an hour for parking (reasonable for shopping I guess).

The test fail is definitely true, I suspect you'd have to be very unlucky to actually get prosecuted for not driving in a bus lane when you should, but I'm sure you can be.

I shall shout 'I have a VIP pass, losers!" the next time this happens to me (which will not be long given that I drive in Edinburgh).

It's absolutely amazing that people queue for ages just because they are ignorant of the rules of the road, all the better for me though!

Moscow already has VIP lanes I think, no doubt the wealthy Russians in London would appreciate the idea here too.
They could probably do it too. Don't they own most of London anyhow?

Pah, furriners owning chunks of our country: there ought to be a law agin it. frown

....and while we're about it, foreign companies ought not to be owning our utility companies either. We ought to retain control of these vital assets in our own hands. Well that wot I reckon anyhow.

Cue Ned Seagoon singing "There'll always be an England, and England shall be free...." etc., followed by thunderous applause from the Goon Show audience. That's more like it! biggrin

In Leicester if there isn't times on a sign, which is most, then they operate 24/7 which is silly because buses don't run 24/7.

What makes you think people who use the bus don't pay tax?

I can never see the point in an empty bus lane and a queue of traffic that could be half of the length if the bus lane was scrapped. Or the fanatical enforcement, eg make you wait right to the end before crossing it, even if it would save you 10 minutes of queuing. It's our road and we're being robbed of it so peasants can hop on a bus and think they own a bit of the road that they haven't actually paid for. Why are we subsidising buses out of the taxes we pay as car drivers?
It's a stick to force you out of your car and onto a bus.
Well it sure feels like it.

Eileen and I both have bus passes, so we do sometimes leave the car at home and take the bus; but it is extremely uncomfortable with all the thumps and bangs due to the disgraceful state of the roads, not to mention the clattering of the internal fittings. Buses are not rattle-free and pleasant things in which to travel, and I blame it on the incompetence of Local Authorities in their failure to maintain the roads decently. furious

Sorry to admit this but I am a retired bus driver, please don't shoot me.
The idea of bus lanes was for busses to be able to keep to time. How many
of you who use them ranting when they are running late.
The last bus route I drove before retiring was a 'dedicated bus route'.
This means it had a 'bus lane' added to a two lane road making it three lanes.
Certain sections even had a completely separate lane away from the road and
in two places, a new road for busses only (not even the emergency services could
use either of them).
Do you know what picensoreded us off the most. Car drivers using them as a means
of getting from A - B faster or actually using the bus only roads.

The only bus lane I have seen regularly used by the vast majority of traffic outwith its times of operation is the one in London Road, High Wycombe (A40).

I would love to know what makes this one so special!

Keep 'em - when driving in England, especially London, see them as an idiot tax for those who don't read the hours of operation - nice free lane here I come! biggrin

The prosecution bit, although BiB will probably be along soon to say it is true.
