Wouldn't call the Caterham a fully homologated regular production car unlike the Alfa.

That Alfa is quicker than I thought it would be.

Would still have th Porsche over the P1 though.

I don't think it's "fk all", but I don't personally think they'll come anywhere near in a standard LaFerrari.

They're probably in the process of modifying it to a spec that's not road legal though, then claiming that it is when they set the record.
Much like a certain Italian manufacturer of low volume hypercars who set a record at the Top Gear track on cut slicks.

"Calibration and final tuning" to deliver the official lap time.... I would love to know what this comprises of!!!

Im sure all the manufacturers do it, but with turbo engines turning the boost up and changing the engine mapping for a "qualifying lap" must be relatively easy to do.
Well in Alfa's case it at least seems to involve taping up the shut-lines.
If Alfa had smoothed in the headlights, how much faster would it be then!

Saw a P1 on the road nearby the Nurburgring this morning. No sign of it on track earlier though.
Don't worry there is an article about it somewhere.

They are using stone age technology compared to McLaren.
Perhaps I've missed something but just how is the Laferrari in any way 'stone age technology' compared to the P1? Both are running exceedingly complicated electronics and hybrid tech and one could quite plausibly argue that the V12 in the laferrari is a rather more advanced piece of kit than the V8 in the P1....

I would like to see a customer car try to replicate those numbers first instead of simply relying on what Ferrari claim to declare it 'much faster' however....

Ehm, I do believe that the P1 has endured probably more track-focused development for the P1 than Ferrari did for LaFerrari but frankly I believe that Ferrari will always be the more desiderated object before even starting, it costs more, it will sell more...on the technical sde using a turbocharged engine is a bit like cheating. And the P1 usues a carbon tub that can be found in a "mass production" supercar like the MP4-12C, come on...

Being pedantic, yes; what boundary-pushing technology is incorporated that allows this? Have they got a nice fat torque curve or have they cut the balls off the low range just to get big figures at the top end?

Etc. etc.

Mostly because I'd be interested to know.

I also thought the same when I read the Alfa claim. Caterham went faster 13 yrs ago with Robert Nearn driving. That was a one-off session and the car won't have been set up perfectly with the ring (they ran on a very slim budget in those days).

Amazed so few magazines or journalists have spotted that Alfa are telling porkies?
IIRC it was late November afternoon, a Wheeltorque track day. I'd been out earlier (in my ex-Academy 7) and had given up for the day, too cold. Must have been 4pm, 3-4C air temp.

I was sort of hoping for a Max Torque/CraigyMc type technical explanation.

I'm sure the 1999 Honda S2000 engineers are feeling quite smug at those figures.

Saw it on the track about 18:00. Too many other manufacturers testing for them to get the best time.

Well the Porsche is the least powerful isnt it?? I like the P1 and I think it will be the fastest of the 3 around there, don't think Ferrari need to beat the Porsche time as much as Mclaren did. Those 2 are being spoken of as the real tech cars, whilst the Ferrari in a more old school manner (I use old school term loosely). Me so far on looks alone I'd take the Porsche.

I'm just wondering if any P1 owners will actually take thier rather expensive cars to the Nurburgring!
Will at least make a change to watching them kerb crawling around Kensington and Hyde Park smile
