Surely not eligible for the Production class in Lotus Cup?!
Yep, eligible - the power to weight ratio will level it against the other variants.

As someone who races in the Trophy and Cup I have to say I'm really impressed by the Exige Cup R and this looks like a great little car too. I'm sure if Lotus could price the cars a tad lower they would be flying out the door but I guess they can't. I'm sure nobody will race one of these as the splitters and parts will be fairly costly to replace I'm sure. Put it this way - I "hope" nobody races one of these!!

1 post in 15 months? I would say obvious troll is obvious, but i think you're just a moron.

Please send me a number for your contact that can get 40K M3s and GTRs. I reckon we could make a fortune here.

I'll buy you an Elise, and a Blackberry to match it.
No troll.

Yes second hand bmw and gtr. Much better than first hand lotus. Also a deal more practical.

Sorry I'm not a forum dweller. I'm IRL :P

It is stupidly expensive for essentially the same car, just a modified version of at best a car that's been in production since 2002, 11 years! and started at ~£26K. Does it still come fitted with the same steering wheel I had in my 2001 VX220 like the cars on the stand at Goodwood this last summer had? What a bargin... rolleyes

Sure, just buy one of those other, cheaper Elises from someone else.

They're totally different experiences, drive a nice one then tell us your thoughts.
Personally I've never had the urge to buy either a gtr or m3

I'm sure what 4a4 meant to say was:
"1 post in 15 months? Top lurking there. Glad to see you offering a comment, I hope my polite and reasoned difference of opinion won't make you shy about joining in the beer PH fun more often."

Who cares about what the steering wheel is like?! its what its connected to and how it is connected that counts. However fyi my 12 plate Elise doesn't have the same wheel as any vx220, does have indicator stalks from a metro tho, which is making me want to sell it for an Audi A3. Nicer steering wheel you see....

Fair enough if you think an engine swap (forced as the old motors out of production) and a few clam shell changes merit a £14K increase in cost on a car that's development can effectively be written off it was so long ago. 975kg FFS the mk3 MR2, steel shelled, massively more comfortable and user friendly weighs 975kg. How have Lotus made it so heavy using plastic and Aluminium?? Would anyone defend BMW still selling an M3 designed in the '90's today and increasing the cost for every minor cosmetic change - No chance! Its £10K more than an M135i for gods sake, there is bugger all to an Elise to merit it costing £39,000 even if it was a genuine new car, not little more than a facelift on a design that's changed insignificantly since 1996.

Nope. Both 7's and 8's are current LTS compound tyres.

Great tyres as well
You mean there's an AD08 LTS? That's news to me! smile

you're not comparing apples with apples there, the base spec Elise is way lighter (over 100kgs) than a mk3 mr2 and is about £28k, whats making this Elise so heavy is the supercharger, bigger brakes, bigger wheels aerokit etc and the fact its a wet weight.

please don't mention the M135i in a thread about track biased Elises, your an old hand around here but that makes you look a bit silly. Tell you what ill do 10 laps round silverstone GP in an elise S and you do 10 laps in a 135 and we'll compare times, dash warning lights and subsequent bills at the end of the day.

as you've owned a VX220 you'll know ill be faster, more reliable (round a track) and considerably better off (tyres, brakes and god knows what else BMW have engineered to go pop come inspection II time)

for the dedicated track go'er amongst the piston head populous this elise will find favour. Silly name tho, i'll grant you that.

You are correct on all count's (I'm not going to trawl the net for exact weights of each car but the MR2 is quoted by Evo etc as 975kg and so's this Elise), all I have issue with is the price. The M135i was just an example of "value" its complicated, its got lots of expensive electronics, gadgets etc etc. The Elise is basic, very basic, there are not a lot of parts to an Elise to make the cost add up to £39,000,+VAT I just noticed so really £47,000, crazy money.

Why are people comparing a fully FIA approved racing car that's not even road legal to mass produced road cars?

The road-going version is more than £10k cheaper if you want a road car.

Low volume and largely hand-assembled sportscars will always look like poor value next to hot hatches. BMW can punt a basic 1-series hatch out for £17500, how much more do you think it costs them to build an M135i and sell it for 30 grand?

Scene: the Lotus boardroom, Hethel

CEO, "Well men, we're down on sales and turnover. How can we improve the figures?"

Non-exec, "You have two choices, sell more cars or charge more for the same number you're already selling."

Sales Director, "We've been doing our best but people just don't seem to want to buy very many of our cars."

Marketing director, "We could do a special edition with some cheap stickers, a cheap bodykit and a few different parts at same cost."

FD, "The figures say that a special edition is the best way to go, and the more we can charge for it the better."

CEO, "How much do we charge for a base Elise these days and how much more will it cost to make this special edition?"

Sales director, "The base car sells for about £28,500"

Engineering director, "We could do the special edition for about £2,000 in extra parts and the build cost will stay the same."

FD, "I'm liking the sound of this. Costs an extra £2,000 to build so lets go the whole hog and add an extra £5,000 to the selling price, giving us an extra £3,000 profit per car."

CEO, "I didn't get where I am today by pussying about with pennies at the edges! Make the stickers a bit bigger and charge them £39,000 for it!"

The board, "Yes sir that's a brilliant idea. No wonder you're the top man at Lotus. The company is safe in your hands. Can I polish your shoes now or shall I pick them up later outside your bedroom door? And how would you like your eggs for breakfast?"

CEO, "Well done men, we soon got that sorted. Mine's a gin and tonic!".

Ginetta G40R then £29K inc Vat and its a recent design for a smaller manufacturer.
