Why dont they just get rid of the .9 and round it up to the next penny. After all its not like the .9 is in the samesize font as the rest of the price?

Back in the late 80s / early 90s there was a petrol station in Holmfirth who's petrol pumps had buttons on so that you could put £5,£10, £20 etc which I thought was a good idea, but I have never seen them any where else. They where there until the mid 90s when the garage was closed and became a market

Our local Tesco pay-at-pump lets you do this.

As for me, it depends which petrol station/loyalty card I'm using. Some give points per pound, others it's per litre! smile

I round up to the nearest full tank

unless it is a borrowed car and it gets £5 lumps if it's in danger of running out before I get where I am going

Slightly O/T but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to fill up to the nearest £ due to even the lightest squeeze registering 2-3p. So when you're at £X.99 then the next little squeeze will take you to £X+1.01.

This mainly comes from the long standing habit trying to make it easier when totting up my expenses at the end of the month when we claimed the fuel put in the tank rather than ppm.

So as a result I now just fill it till it clicks or, on the odd occassion when I've got a long way to go, right up the neck of the filler. Don't really bother with the monetary value any more.

I don't have the pleasure of filling the car but I just give the chappy at the garage AED 100 (Apprx 17 quid) and tell him to 'fillerup'. hehe

Insert nozzle. Pull trigger until tank is full. Pay for fuel.

It is not rocket science.
Correctamundo, I'm far too busy / important to be making regular trips to the filling station.

i always watch the litres but never stop it on a set amount, wait until it clicks then reduce the pump power until the second click, lift the hose up, shake the nozzle...

Thank you. I mean it. smile You wouldn't believe how many small minded people I get who can't get it to stop at .00 think that I get the pumps to do it on purpose and I'm ripping them off! They don't realise how small 1p worth of fuel is these days.
I've even put a bowl on the counter full of pennies with a sign saying "Don't worry about the odd penny, if you've gone over have one on us."

The staff on the forecourt have been primed so that if anyone accuses me of thieving their penny, they are to call me so that I can explain it to them face to face.
No one's taken me up on the offer yet.

So to all those out there who think we do it on purpose, believe me, if I planned on ripping anyone off I would take them for a penny, they'd be stood there in their socks. Carless.

I used to put a tenner in a week, but that was when I was at school, had stuff all money (£30 a week in cash on the local market) and petrol was 90p a litre, meaning my £10 got me a quarter of a tank and lasted a week!

These days I squeeze until it clicks, and pay on debit card so I don't have to worry about the numbers. Only difference is when I'm going on a long journey straight after (>300 miles) where i'll "Vent" the tank, which means I can squeexe an extra 5l in.

Or when I was in Luxembourg in the summer. £1 per litre and I got 50l into a not empty 45l tank!

Haha! I' not long back from the States and on my return I managed to spend more on fuel filling up my Merc than I did in the whole two weeks in FL using two cars, one of which was a Mustang!!

I find it's new pumps I struggle to get an exact round pound on. Don't know if it is to do with the type of display and how quick it updates but I still get a bang on round figure (if I'm bothering to try, which isn't often these days, usually just fill it and be done with it) with the older style pumps. Which is odd, the slightly older pumps are still a digital display but I find it much eaiser to get it roll up in 1p ammount when I get close to the magic £XX.00.

However, I do take great pride when I time it perfectly to release the handle and get the perfect £20 or whatever. No taking it to £19.80 and creeping up, just blast straight in at £20 on the money, followed by the Tiger style fist pump in celebration.

Oh, I don't know. I get an enormous sense of satisfaction by opening the microwave door on '0' before the buzzer goes.

After 116 miles, I refilled my Honda 125 tank for the princely sum of £5.08. It felt good. I could have gone on and squeezed another 2p in but what the hey... wink

Years ago an acquaintance of mine swore he could fill his bike tank for less by doing it a bit at a time rather than just holding the pump open.

I don't see how that would work and could be harrised to try it out on my Cortina but he swore by it.
