I'm probably going to go through the same 'what car shall I get' for my daughter next year. Another way to approch it, is to pop into local insurance broker, and find the 10 cheapest cars to insure. Then pick from the list. Hopefully, something acceptable will be on it. Plus the parent on the insurance as well.
tbh, it takes a 1 min on Go Compare for a car, but you need the details, will they honestly do a search through every car and tell you your top 10? I would be inmpressed if they had the system to do this. I have tried some oddballs like an MGF to see if any weird ones worked, but in all honesty its the group 2's which are winning as you'd expect.

GF's son had a Corsa C. After seeing the aftermath of the crash he walked away from I'd certainly consider getting my own kids one when the time comes.

OP, if you buy a Saxo make sure you remove the BMW magnets in the rear subframe.

HTH.

A bit more miles than you asked, but how about one of these?

In another life I used to get asked this question a lot. If you can find one, try a 1.2 Fiat Stilo. They are cheap to insure and very good in a crash compared to the competition.
I just tried this with the only 1.2 I could find on Autotrader, 700pa more than the Nissan.
Oops - shows you how much I know! How much is a 1.4 Focus?

The Stilo is a much bigger car though - I suppose from a safety angle - probably the best.

Micra K11. Robust, easy to fix, surprisingly fun to hussle.

Now that would be ace, sadly its double the price of the Nissan to ensure, around 3.5K.

As others have said, the mk1 Ka is a lot older than the other, but a good drive.

Again, a little older than the others, but have you considered a 306? Back when I was learning my parents did similar to your plan, and my mum downsized from a volvo v70 to a 1.8 306. Insurance was veryu reasonable (8 years ago) and they are a very good stear. I think they dod a 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 petrols, so plenty to choose from, and as I say the insurance wasn't bad at all for me on the 1.8.

You can get really nice ones for not very much money at all, and I think they still look great.

How much would the Saab be to insure for him?
I know it will be astronomic but it might be cheaper than buying another car and you know it's history and you know it's safe.

VW Up! on contract hire. Modern, cheap, safe. Insurance should be as cheap as it gets.

Mk1 Focus, it's safe enough. If you're that worried about safety, get him to do pass plus as well. Insurance difference between 1.4 and 1.6 is next to nothing, just get the 1.6.

Avoid the Stilo, it's not safer than other cars and its an utter turd. There is absolutely no reason to buy one.

Looks like a perfectly acceptable thing for 3 grand - I didnt even know you could get one with a 1.4 engine in that shape though!

Slightly over-budget though...although its only 4 years old and 45k miles, very cheap to insure!

Of all the mk1 focus the 1.8 tddi focus was cheapest, the petrols cost more. My one even ran on veg oil when the frier was emptied, couldn't kill the damn thing. Took a load of abuse and now my 17 year old brother is learning in the same one.

yes

From personal experience I'd steer clear of Saxos at all costs.

The Picanto; I looked at one for SWMBO and as soon as I opened the bonnet and looked at the welding it reminded me of a 30 yr old Metro. I came home and researched the crash test data. Sure enough, three stars, so we bought a Yaris (five stars) this was four years back so in both cases the old model.

Three months later she was hit from behind by a drunk using his phone and shunted into the car in front. The crumple zones worked wonders and she escaped shocked but unhurt. That wouldn't have happened in the Picanto.

Runabouts is the lowest tier Pendragon. They are usually a bit ropey, but they get better money for them than at auction.

What year / engine / mileage on the Saab? Where are you based?
