In situations like this I think the criminal justice system needs to be given more creativity.

If I were the judge I'd have done the following:

1) 5 year driving ban from the date he passes his test, not ticking over immediately.

2) £15,000 worth of work provided to the aunt at a nominal pay of £10 per hour. This can be anything - washing cars, doing the dishes, walking the dog, painting the fence etc.

3) £30,000 of the same for the owners of the house he crashed into.

Each 'victim' can elect to send him to work for a 3rd party, singing to old folks in a home, collecting for the poppy appeal etc.

He needs to put in a minimum of 20 hours per week for EACH victim - if he misses this target even once he is killed immediately.

Bad times for the owner, but the amount of damaged cause is alarming seeing as one side on the house is completely destroyed.

Allegedly, the driver shouldn't even have been on the road. Apparently he was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of years ago and this is, allegedly, his second crash since, both apparently due to blackouts. The first time he is supposed to have driven up a lamp post, the second he managed to completely fail to stop at the end of a road, ride down the left hand side of the driveway, round a corner and into the house. If he had hit a few inches to the side the chimney would have come down on him. The engine was still running when the emergency services got there if I remember correctly.
