I would quite happily build an extension on my garage for a three screen version of F355 arcade by Sega.

Now that WAS a piece of machinery.

But a F355 cab is $7000, which would leave change for a slice of real track action.....

I don't really play any of the proper racing sims, just Forza...

Though driving my RX-7 and RX-8 in the game does share a lot of characteristics as the real cars, I wouldn't say it feels close enough to warrant me playing over driving. I'd soon actually take the car out and may more and actually feel what is happening rather than just control what is happening.

In the game I lose that 'oh st' moment when the back end slides out.

I think they are great for learning track layouts etc but you don't get the feeling of the car so you can't learn how to counter movements before they happen. You are essentially curing rather than preventing unwanted movements.

I have many hours of console racing under my belt.

the a few problems of trying to replace actually getting out there with a games console is.

  • theres no seat of the pants feeling.
  • that slightly panicky feeling you get as you slightly overdo it into a corner.
  • spirit of comradery with the other competitors etc
  • no moronic school kids to deal with talking crap and ruining the event!
  • Graphics are almost like real life!

some of the major benefits of using a console

  • unlimited seat time at no additional cost ( unless you brick your console lol )
  • can compete with jobless mates that are otherwise 100% unreliable
  • you get to stay close to the pies and lovin' from the mrs wink
  • Graphics are quite good

A 12 car rally event at a local motor club is much cheaper than dumping £300 + into a g25/7 and seat setup... but 1 bump, or 3 events later and suddenly the console is cheaper again! ( 1 event if you get too carried away in the pub after lol )
