Have had ours for three years now and , touch wood, nothing has failed. Auto, V6 petrol, Fridge, Cooker, running water...
Have found some pics of ours from about two years ago.The wheels are now gloss grey and that funny parking stick has gone

At a push you could sleep two upstairs but not much fun when one needs to go down for a pee. A bottle is needed in the upper deck!

All in all, cracking vehicle. Costs about £130.00 pa to insure

Ours, being the V6 is 2WD.I think only the diesels are 4WD

Loads of gripping info here www.bongofury.co.uk

These are all grey imports and arrive in the UK as 8 seater minibus thingies.

we are looking at 'Free Top' Bongos at the moment, probably go for one without the kitchen fitted, then we can either fit a rear kitchen, thus maintaining the decent width seat for the two spawn.

We had an older model 'Bongo Brawny' for a while when I was a kid. From memory the name was the best thing about it.

So these are not factory built as campers then? They are converted in the UK.

Just looked at some used ones, they hold their value well
I've a couple of friend(ee)s who have them, they love them. In fact in general I've never heard a bad word about them.

And surely the best name ever! biggrin

Some came from the factory with a basic kitchenette kit in the back, with water tank, sink, battery, 220v & a tap/shower.

I have owned about 5 Bongo's, great cars for what they are, not as big inside as you think & quite thirsty especially the diesels.

Makes far more sense than the scrap VW camper vans that litter the hard shoulder of the M5 come summer!
My thoughts exactly; the fascination with clapped out campers vans beggars belief.

Its better than a tent.
Performance and handling is marginally better, not sure about the styling however biggrin
I'm not convinced, my tent's been all over the alps a hell of a lot quicker than a Bongo can manage hehe

The proper name is : Mazda Bongo Friendee Auto Free Top!

Theyre a brilliant little van and I was tempted to import them (long before they appeared everywhere), but their bulk made importation extremely expensive. The vehicle itself would have cost about £1,750 + fees for top grade in Japan, but you have to pay for shipping by volume, not floor area, making it damned expensive at US$68 per M³!

When they took off and even tatty examples were selling for over £5,000 I regretted staying with Imprezas et al.

It's only because I read every post when this thread was revived. I, too, secretly have a soft spot for these.
