Thank god someone has posted this, I was going to do the same. Who said a 208HP Impreza is slow, if it's a burst of acceleration off the mark at some traffic lights there are very few cars (that you see on a regular commute) that could keep up.
A standard 1994 UK Turbo 2000 will hit 60 in 6seconds, that IS FAST in 1994 and it IS still fast.
The alleged TypeR that was really slow can do it in 4.5 seconds as standard.
Bear in mind that a newer Focus RS with lots of computer trickery and 92bhp more that the old softened uk2000 cannot hit 60 until 5.9 seconds.
That's will be even worse in the damp.

I had a standard-ish WRX with some STI bits. "Most boring car ever" is overstating it a lot but that said I didn't keep it long. Very fast, great noise, great steering, great engine, massive grip but overall still not very involving. Just a bit too much like a normal car in fast-forward.It is possible that because your car was 150k miles, it was a bit worn, but to quote your own words from your garage:

I was delayed in getting this car by a boyhood fascination with MR2s, so I had to own an MR2 turbo first, but now I'm an Impreza owner I realise what I've been missing out on.
The car really is everthing they say it is. Crazy fast, hyper agile, alert and responsive.
If you see one cornering at reasonable speeds and looking uncomfortable at it, blame the driver. It's probably me.
The car itself is capable of so much more than you could ever really use on most roads in this country.
Try one. If you really are a keen driver you'll struggle to get out again.

Quite.And small! They really are quite narrow which, along with great visibility, makes hustling them on narrow and bumpy backroads that much easier and safer.
In November 2009 I paid 24k for a 6-month old mk v golf r32. The same week I bought a 99v impreza turbo wagon for £1400 as a winter shed. The impreza was far more fun to drive, much faster, much more practical, better in the snow (09 was a great winter, we had 3 feet of snow and temps dropped to -23!) plus, I sold it the next year for 2k!
I got my 99 turbo 2000 wagon as winter runaround, only considered it as a cheap, semi interesting estate, guess what, it's fantastic, in these stty wet conditions there is nothing else i want to drive, its so surprisingly quick off the mark and these cars really do properly handle well.
How anyone can say these are boring, i dont know
Got some proper winter tyres on now and this thing is unstoppable.
Should have got one years ago, as until recently, i genuinely didn't know what all the fuss was about.

I not long ago flew down to London to pick up a 2004 WRX with my mate. less than 4.5k it cost him, closer to 4k if i recall correctly. Sold with graphs showing 340bhp.
Very quick car! Surprisingly so. Loud and chavvy, really crappy plastic interior and poor image but f*ck me that thing goes some. 340bhp, 4wd and 5 doors too... nothing comes close for 4k imo!

Having had one of these myself, they are 308bhp std and are one of the fastest impreza'a made especially the version 5,6,7's.They were rated at 4.1 to 60 but when the journalists tested them they were getting them in the high 3's consistently.
Mine was mildly tuned compared to some and came with printouts of just under 450bhp and it would scare the crap out of anything and most passengers as they were built with one thing in mind. Acceleration. ook at Andy Forrest and his times at TOTB and Scooby shoutouts.

I own a 1998 Version 4 Type R, my previous car was a 1994 WRX which I owned for 7 years.
The WRX with its TD05 turbo had lag beyond lag, which meant if you were sensible and keeping it below 4k rpm it was a decent every day drive but when feeling in the mood for something a little more spirited on private roads it was a hoot and frightened a few M3's in its time.
Sold after 7 years it was written off within 6 months by a pleb who hasn't got a clue.
My Type R is the most fun car I've owned, having had the WRX, a GTI6 and a 1.6 and a 1.9 205 GTI before them. We're not talking about a supercar here, but £ for lb they are tough to beat. Being a 2dr its relatively rare, and said to be (along with the V3) the best Impreza built. I'm running it in at the moment, 400 miles with another 600 to go on a forged 2.1 stroker engine.
My advice would be to sign up to scoobynet, there's a wealth of knowledge on there. Any car you go to see, try to judge the intelligence from the owner. Check for modifications and whether it has been remapped for those mods. Lookout for who's worked on it, there's a lot of reliable names attached to Subaru's. A lot of adverts will have ridiculous claims of BHP etc, and there are unfortunately a lot of idiot's that own these now as they fall into the boy racer price bracket now.

My goal is to own a V5 or V6 type R by the end of the year. I've spent far too long drooling at some of the cars for sale on Scoobynet. It is a shame that they have fallen into the price bracket for barry boys.giblet said:

In a way yes, but in a way they are looked down upon now. It depends what you want it for, mine I bought cheap as it is tatty and due the engine being rebuilt (around the 100k mark on a JDM). Rear arches are a problem, check there isn't even the smallest sign of bubbling rust, and look in the boot by the jack for rust.
Impreza owners are split down the middle, either spaz's or people who take good care of their car and want to own it for a long time.

I've suffered some serious rust issues before on Japanese imports that I didn't check out properly before buying so I'll be checking over nay potential cars fully. I'll probably be looking for a clean example owned by a enthusiast. In my view its worth paying the extra for a good example instead of ploughing money into a cheap one. That's unless you have the tools and know how to change bits yourself. Rear arches are a problem, check there isn't even the smallest sign of bubbling rust, and look in the boot by the jack for rust.

I have fond memories of buying a slightly standard looking one at the jap auctions, by the time I'd hit the first dual carriageway on the way home it obviously was NOT standard. Big turbo, external wastegate, big injectors, HKS management & it dyno'd shortly after at 410bhp. That was some laugh to say the least.
