That's it, I'm keeping my distance from 306s from now on. I didn't realise they were such widowmakers.

306 is predictable and not difficult to drive fast

Prime example why you shouldn't be a tight git on tyres, only thing that stops you pointing in the wrong direction into a hedge (see above)

I once fitted some 'infinity's' to my 306hdi when I was a skint young'un and after the first wet bend I took the car back to the garage and to my great expensive (really couldnt afford it at the time either, why I went for the plastic tyres in the first place)got some decent rubber put on it.

My 306 died much more spectacularly (Not my fault or the tyres I may add)

Jesus, were you steering from the rear seats? lol

Bad luck Matt- it happens to most of us as some point- I learnt a hell of a lot from my first accident (while feeling like a useless fool at the same time). It's not the mistake that matters, but how you learn from the mistake.

I fully agree, very predictable and you can carry a lot of speed through bends. Never really had the back end swing out on me but I assumed that might have been due to the very heavy lump on the nose.

Bad luck.
I did the same to a 106 Rallye I had as an 18 year old (19 years ago!!). Fortunately there was only a ditch waiting or me.

Try a Clio 172/182 next. They have a rear end that is almost impossible to shake.

Almost emulated this in my 172 yesterday. Very controllable once it let go, but virtually no warning that it was about to do so. Again, I think the rear tyres aren't in the best of health (good quality brand, standard fit on the car with plenty of tread, but for some reason that pair had no grip when they were on the front and, hey presto, they now have precious little grip after swapping them to the rear...)

It's a shame but glad you weren't injured. As its been said, with decent rubber the old Pugs aren't too easy to unstick. The hairy moment's I've experienced in 205's/306 was down to naff tyres.

"A combination of very greasy roads, over-enthusiasm, budget rear tyres and the 306's fondness for rear axle rotation"

Is it really the fault of the road, the tyres and the car? No.

Real shame about this, but it would appear running out of talent was the cause nono

We've all (well lots of us) done similar, we mostly walked away and we tend to laugh about it later.

Of course it's the drivers fault, it normally is, but get another 306 Rallye, decent rubber and enjoy yourself. It's what you are supposed to do when you're young, drive fast, crash and pick up a few funny stories.

I remember going to look at one of these for sale and the guy referring the tyres as 'ditch finders'. I didn't buy it.

Really sorry to hear that buddy. This happened to me twice in my 306 HDi Sport 130, the first time on a roundabout and the second time on an exuberant drive back from Goodwood coming over a crest near Midhurst. Neither resulted in any damage other than a good upholstery clean but butt clenching none the less. For outright fun, I recommend you get another one!

Sorry to read about the cars demise, always a favourite of mine these but greasy roads, new car, crap tyres, over-exuberant driving = recipe for disaster.

Glad to hear it wasn't more serious. smile
