I was going to say Aston with private plate then no one would be any the wiser but if an Aston really is verging on ten years old then it would have to be the Jaaaag in this situation.

991, 458, R8 or Gallardo.

Anything else is old man territory.
Get yourself a test drive in a v8s or v8r if you can, then report back.

I was in a similar dilemma earlier this year OP, in the end we decided to move house and put the car off till next year.

I never did make my mind up, but finding a good used f type was hard work, there are/were some really ratty 12 month old v8s on the market and finding the right spec was hard too.

If you're buying new, not a problem of course. (ETA, incidentally I went on a tour around the F-Type production line a few weeks ago, I tagged along with the jag enthusiast club, however I think they are pretty easy to arrange, especially if you're thinking of buying new, well worth a morning of your time, their quality control is especially impressive on the new cars. Also great to see so many in the same place and is much better for chosing colour/trim/wheels/etc to see them all in the "flesh").

Ultimately my thinking was the jag is a better car, no question, but the aston is... Well... An aston!

It's a really tough choice.

Jag is so much better appointed, faster, better handling, more comfortable, more high tech, etc

Aston is an aston! wink

I don't think you'd regret either choice and you can always change at a later date.

My budget was probably a fair bit less than yours, 65k tops so my options were a little more limited.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

I'm going to be agonising over this for a while next year, so will be interesting to see which way you go! I've complicated it even further because I've since thrown an Esprit V8 into the mix too as a wildcard choice!

No first-hand experience of either but I would not put an F-Type in the same class as an Aston Martin.
I'd agree. The F-type is a much better looking car.

It's not just about that though is it. It's very difficult to be subjective about cars like this & it isn't just about facts & figures - I'm pretty sure a modern hot hatch would run rings round most Ferraris from the 1950's as well as being more economical, reliable & comfortable, but I know which I'd rather have.

Both the F-type and the Aston are beautiful cars, no denying that, but like someone else has said, the Jag is an excellent car, but the Aston is, well an Aston Martin.

A few years back, I worked for a little IT company which got bought out by a big multinational. It made the 2 blokes that owned it very wealthy (top, top, top Xmas do that year!). One bought a Jaguar XKR and the other an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage (like the OP he'd wanted an Aston since a kid). In every way possible, the Jag was the "better" car - apart from the fact it wasn't an Aston.....

I know a lot of people are saying AM but I have to say the new F-type is gorgeous and as nice as the AM is I have a strong feeling if you were to test drive both you would fall in love with the F-type.

Many a people slander technological advances in cars but even in a couple of years the difference it makes to a car is huge and the years between the two you are choosing is massive.

The AM is the dream of yours and the last thing you want is to think I wish I bought an AM so I would really suggest a long test drive in both and see how you feel then.

You will either think wow this is a dream come true I need to buy it now for the AM or you will think screw the AM this jag is a a dream to be had, ill take it now.

Dreams change my friend..... For me I would have the F-type V8.

I've owned an Aston. Within a month of realising the dream I was bored of it. I wouldn't mind a V12, but at the price point that the OP is looking at it would be the Jag for me. A better all round car with a glorious sound track.

I had a heart attack and then turned 50 the following year...decided to live the dream and buy an Aston (DB9 Volante). There are better cars out there (911, GTR etc) but always wanted an Aston since my younger days. No regrets. Ticked one more off the bucket list.

I understand the Aston dream but the modern Vantage?? Not a chance.

It's the CSL argument. There are real ones and there ones for people called Graham who are accountants.

The F Type doesn't just beat the gay Vantage up, it does a Blackwash on Gattings nose job.
DB9 is a different kettle of fish. Lovely cars. Buy one.

I personally would get the Jaguar. Aston Martins are beautiful but they are very common cars here in London, whereas the Jaguar is not. The coupe in particular still very much has the wow factor. I think I would also get frustrated with the Aston's 10 year old technology such as sat nav.

Having said that, you could do both. Put your name down for a Jaguar and buy an Aston in the meantime. You won't lose too much on the Aston given where it is on the depreciation curve.

think I would take the jag, it just looks sublime. Aston is an Aston but looking a little dated now,

Quick question...have you sat in or driven either?
I dreamt of having a DB9 for years...when I was finally in a position to get one.... The bloody thing didn't fit... I'm tall and could not find a position in the DB9 which was even remotely safe or comfortable...

Two of my clients have F types, coupe and drop top. I fit no problem....they are very happy with them...
See if you can test drive side by side...or at least on the same day...

Cheers A

Don't Aston's of that period have a pretty terrible reputation for unreliability?

Are you nuts? That period lasted roughly 60yrs!
Granted it wasn't much different for Jag smile

Both Gaydon cars.

Sorry, there appears to be some sort of difficulty here. You can have an Aston. I am confused as to why there is any other issue at hand. Go buy the f***ng Aston. It's an Aston. You can have it. Problem solved.

And of course jags have a fantastic reputation

Get the Aston. I've got one and it's far from perfect but that's not the point. And open the boot of an f-type and ask how you'd go away in one.

If you can get a manual v12 car, either a vantage or even a dbs, you'll not lose much in depreciation either. And then come over to aston section of this site
