If the 996 was good looking, they'd be worth more. It ain't, so they aren't.
Pretty sure a lot of people denounced the 964 in a similar way once anonymous said:

And the CSL comparison is hardly fair, they are more expensive for starters & were a limited run - compare them to a GT3 if you must but I think I know how that might end up!And horses for courses on 993's, looked at two before buying my 996, just don't get them at all. Not as good looking as the older cars, not as good dynamically as the later cars & don't even start on the ergonomics. But I don't have a beard, don't drink Old Badgers Todger or wear wooly hats so my opinion is worthless!

It's ugly, it's AWD, it's forced induction AND it's got hideous headlights apparently My how time changes opinions. Never thought I would see a 996 appreciation thread. For years now they have been derided as the ugly duckling, black sheep of the 911 lineage, worth little more than scrap value.
Now I am seeing posts declaring them more beautiful / desirable than the previous holy grail of 911's - the 993 !!

Im talking purely from a depreciation perspective thus my keep for a long long time comment. I bet the car drives fantastically but spending £30,000 all in to still have a car where the bores will eventually turn into the shape of cam lobes and may at best be worth £5k over a standard minter seems abit backwards to me. Each to their own though and I am glad that there are options for people!

I know, does make me chuckle! i'm sure only last week there was a thread on the porsshe forum asking people to state what their least favourite model was... how times have changed. Now I am seeing posts declaring them more beautiful / desirable than the previous holy grail of 911's - the 993 !!

is it just me, or is the 993 getting uglier and uglier - and the 996 the other way.
used to LOVE the 993, now the 964 looks much better.
design hasnt aged well imo.
I think in years to come, more and more people will release early 911/912 (long nose), narrow body 964 and Gen1 996 (without GT3 bodykit) are 'classic' 911 exterior designs. used to LOVE the 993, now the 964 looks much better.

I was thinking the same as you. You could spend 30k on the 996, and be lucky to get 15k if that on a private sale. Or you could spend the 30k or less on a nice 997 and only lose a very little per year in depreciation. Each to their own though and I am glad that there are options for people!
As a keeper I can see some sense in this and you could probably do it for less and do it bit by bit. Problem is, it's hard to improve the looks of the thing (except crashing it) and that will always keep values low and they're hardly likely to become scarce unlike the air cooled stuff.
In a way I'm tempted but I'd have to find a cost effective way of ditching the fried eggs. Anybody know of a way?

I keep seeing 996s like this... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p... ...and even cheaper Boxter S's and thinking, "Hmm, could I manage that on a finance deal...?" Honestly, how hard could it be?
The shape of the 996 has grown on me though. Like a lot of folk, I used to prefer the 993 and to an extent, still do but in plain, non-turbo spec I think the 996 is an elegant shape and a slightly modded one like this appeals. The Turbo, I'm not sure about though - the headlights on those (adopted by later 996s) look a bit awkward to me. Point to point, I'd imagine you'd struggle to get a quicker car for the money.
