Another week another cheaper McLaren using the same carbon tub and engine, I wonder if the plan is to just keep offering lesser models until they are eventually competing with Lotus/Zenos etc ??
I am hoping the are and are able to provide something for me in the 10 - 15 grand market segment Seriously, cant believe anyone is moaning, its awesome looking and still mentally fast, it a British company taking on the world at Supercars (and Hypercars), coming from nowhere (relatively, with road cars, notwithstanding the F1) in 2011 and now selling products that compete on equal terms with the best the worlds other manufacturers can offer, they arent cars you need to make excuses or allowances for either.
Ok, I've done this so that I can understand the McLaren range myself. I've based the P1 numbers on the PS I've found on Wikipedia and I've made up the P2 and P3 names (different P number for a different body).
CURRENT RANGE:
McLaren P1 1,000 GTR
McLaren P1 916
McLaren P2 675 LT
McLaren P2 650 S Spider
McLaren P2 650 S Coupe
McLaren P3 570 S
McLaren P3 540 C
NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION:
McLaren MP4-12C
McLaren F1

McLaren P1 1,000 GTR
McLaren P1 916
McLaren P2 675 LT
McLaren P2 650 S Spider
McLaren P2 650 S Coupe
McLaren P3 570 S

I would for the glorious N/A V10 noise alone, although it would have to be a spyder with sports exhaust mod to max out the noise
The performance is irrelevant, all these cars are so far beyond the average enthusiasts ability and a light year beyond what you can use on the road, may as well just enjoy the noise
Pfft, if that's your premise, get an SL600 with a custom exhaust. Makes everything this side of a Zonda sound very tame. The performance is irrelevant, all these cars are so far beyond the average enthusiasts ability and a light year beyond what you can use on the road, may as well just enjoy the noise
Dirty dirty noise, the V10 does sing thou
It looks like the 540C has also lost the ceramic brakes which would count for perhaps £10k of the difference between it and the 570C (assuming that it has them as standard).
I personally really like the look of it and the (relatively) lower price point means we will see more McLaren's on the road and that surely can't be a bad thing? I'm all for British manufacturing and would love to see as many McLaren's as I see Porsche's. It means that one day I might be able to afford a used one then!
Keep it up McLaren!

I'm with you... and given Alfa have been able to produce a car with a carbon fibre tub for 50 grand, hopefully there's scope for an entry level McLaren at 911 Carrera S money at some point...I personally really like the look of it and the (relatively) lower price point means we will see more McLaren's on the road and that surely can't be a bad thing? Sports Series is one model coming in two states of tune, Super Series is one model coming in two states of tune (in the UK), Ultimate Series is one model coming in two states of tune (if you count the GTR). I can't see anything confusing about this. The three models all look different from each other and have substantially different tech underneath, even if they do share basic configurations. For a company (division?) that got on its feet a grand total of five years ago and is pursuing a policy of rapid expansion, they'd have been mad to try making completely different cars. Frankly, I'm very impressed by how well they're doing.
As many have pointed out above, a three model line up, each with 2 (or 3) engine choices is not very confusing - even if they look similar! The question is has it been a good move to bring out the lesser model after 2nd - it could be perceived as a "poor-man's" 650 rather than the a better version of the 570. The two models seem to be like DB9 is to DBS.
